Background check for a secret equilavint takes about 2 weeks to a month to be vetted. Scrutinary for a top secret equilavint takes longer...of course any security clearance will be squashed by criminal records ie felonies, DUI's. I've personally gone thru half a dozen over the years plus my current job is yearly.
