Port of Ensenada-I always hate when historical books dont have graphics showing what is being talked about so...

CWRN's ore is stored on dock at upper right next to the seawall-pic probably predates CWRN ore-which would be stored starting about where the pic is cut off at the top-
u can see the one ship berth w the one set of cranes at the EIT terminal (terminal CWRN uses).

Port had planned on adding a second berth there by 2009 towards end of dock opposite where CWRN's ore is stored in prep for shipping-and I saw a dredger working opposite(next to) that end of the dock in one of the pics dec 2010-jan 2011 when the port was increasing depth from 40 feet (previous deepwater port designation) to 47 feet-

as ports are increasing depth to accommodate ever deeper drafts-5th and 6th generation ships going to as much as 50-55 feet draft -not to mention vales 350-400k class of 72-75' deep, which is too deep for any port now- Vale loads offshore even in Brazil w those -just started building those and plans have probably ramped down as big boys all got too excited by peak 192/ton ore price Feb 2011 and Vale already has a glut of ships and is having to lease some of its ships

deepest port I could find on west coast was long beach/LA -they were deepening one terminal to 53 feet by combination of dredging and extending terminal farther out-

so Ensenadas 47 feet is very impressive -PANAMAX have been limited to 12.02 meters-ca 39.5 feet because the shallowest point- a lake-has been 40 feet minimum-though they are raising lake by a foot or so while they wait for opening of deeper locks scheduled for 2014.
