We seem to trade in a very similar fashion.  Low volatility in the overall market is a killer on an instrument like SPY.  I like your VXX idea and have been watching it for quite some time.  It is at historic lows.  Another good vlatility intrument is VIXY but they don't have weeklies so you have to be willing to hold the position a bit longer.
