unless MM's were playing games and doing partial fils. also, you can place "this then that" trades, were you start with a small amount, of 102 shares, then sell more. it still costs the same commission.

unless you are a trader, and have a trading account and pay a monthly fee instead of per trade fees. then it doesn't matter how small the trade is, its all included in the monthly fee.
