Northern Capital Gateway, the company that runs St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo International Airport, is in discussions with the major U.S. air carriers Delta Airlines and American Airlines about starting direct regular flights from St. Petersburg to the U.S., said Yaroslav Zubilov, director of the government cooperation and public relations at Northern Capital Gateway, reported Interfax last week.

“We are negotiating with Delta Airlines and American Airlines about direct flights from Pulkovo to Atlanta and New York. We are currently showing them figures and traffic numbers,” he said.

According to Zubilov, flights from Pulkovo to the two U.S. cities were chosen because New York is a popular destination and Atlanta’s airport is the busiest hub in the world.

Zubilov also said the company plans to have flights scheduled several times a week.

Delta Airlines told Interfax that “the company is in permanent communication with airports around the world,” but refused to comment on the specific negotiations.

The press service of American Airlines also neither confirmed nor denied negotiations were taking place.

“We are constantly evaluating our network to ensure that we are maximizing our fleet and profitability, matching demand and strengthening our presence in key hubs,” said the American Airlines press service, reported Interfax.

The main hub for Delta Airlines is the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. While the main hub of American Airlines is the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in Texas, the airline heavily uses John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Currently there are no direct flights from St. Petersburg to the U.S. Passengers can fly from Pulkovo to a number of U.S. cities with airport transfers in Moscow, London, Helsinki, Frankfurt , Barcelona and Reykjavik.

Well Shit! Perhaps there goes any competitive advantage.
