I think the rationale behind it is to discourage the short interests that have been taken on the stock since shorts who don't cover beforehand will be on the hook for the extra shares. I took a long position in MRIB and the stock is plagued by short sellers. I think the company is simply trying to get rid of them temporarily at least.
