- No, you can't invest directly in the CBOE Volatility Index -- including in the funds and notes whose names bears the index's "VIX" label. Today's trading shows what happens when you try. But the exchange-traded funds and notes whose names bear a variant of "VIX" are down. Barclays iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (VXX) is off more than 2%. The leveraged version ProShares Ultra VIX Short- Term Futures exchange-traded fund (UVXY) is falling more than 4%. VelocityShares Daily Inverse VIX Short-Term ETN (XIV) and ProShares Short VIX Short-Term Futures ETF (SVXY), which are effectively anti-volatility betting tools, are ahead by more than 4%.
