Light The Night: Illuminate Hope for Blood Cancer Patients
Light The Night Campaign Unveils a Season of Hope
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society kicks off philanthropic campaign Light The Night; communities nationwide encouraged to learn why awareness and support is critical.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has officially launched its 31st annual Light The Night campaign, uniting nearly 100 communities to advocate for an end to cancer through illuminated lantern walks. This event has become a hallmark of LLS’s annual outreach since its inception, drawing enthusiastic support across the U.S. each fall in an effort to raise funds for essential research and patient support services.
Understanding Blood Cancer
With over 100 different types of blood cancer affecting an estimated 1.6 million individuals in the nation, the impact of these diseases is profound. Families, friends, and caregivers are also significantly affected, making awareness and support vital.
September: National Blood Cancer Awareness Month
September is recognized as National Blood Cancer Awareness Month, urging communities to engage with and support local events. E. Anders Kolb, M.D., President and CEO of LLS, emphasizes the importance of understanding these diseases, highlighting that blood cancers often lack the recognition afforded to more well-known cancers.
Education is Crucial
Dr. Kolb stated, "Blood cancer isn't often referred to as 'blood cancer,' leading to a lack of awareness among patients. Recognizing the signs early and accessing the correct information can significantly enhance patient outcomes." LLS is dedicated to providing critical information and resources to help patients through their journey.
Meet LLS's Honored Hero
Each year, Light The Night honors a hero to share their journey. This year’s distinguished hero is Ben Tappana, a courageous 10-year-old survivor who bravely faced acute lymphoblastic leukemia. His journey began with unexplained illnesses and relentless hip pain, leading to his diagnosis following an exhaustive testing process.
The Family's Journey
Ben’s mother recalls the challenging period: "We felt incredibly fearful but did our best to comfort our very confused and sick little boy." After enduring a tough chemotherapy regimen, Ben completed treatment in June 2022, and now he and his family share their story to provide hope to others in similar situations.
Advocating for Change
Though many children survive leukemia, it’s important to note that existing treatments can be harsh and outdated. LLS is leading the charge for change through initiatives like the Dare to Dream Project, aiming to revolutionize children's cancer treatment and help young patients not only survive but thrive post-treatment.
Impact of Light The Night
With its inclusion among the top peer-to-peer fundraising programs, Light The Night has empowered LLS to invest over $1.7 billion in innovative research globally, driving crucial advancements in blood cancer treatments and care.
Partnerships Make a Difference
To enhance the outreach and support of Light The Night, LLS proudly announces its 2024 National Sponsors, showcasing a blend of new and longstanding partnerships.
Looking Ahead
"LLS is profoundly grateful for our sponsors and the unwavering support of the community. Together, we’re making a real difference in the lives of patients and families battling blood cancer," stated Coker Powell, Chief Revenue Officer of LLS. The commitment shown through these partnerships fuels the hope and progress in this ongoing battle.
