Comerica Bank's Metro Detroit Shred Day 2025
Join us for a FREE document shredding and electronics recycling event at Comerica's Great Lakes Campus, proudly partnered with Iron Mountain and Information Systems Resources.
Comerica Bank encourages community members to participate in their 16th annual Metro Detroit Shred Day at the Great Lakes Campus. This open invitation invites individuals to securely dispose of personal documents and electronics on a designated Saturday from early morning until early afternoon.
This year’s event is particularly special as it marks the second time the Shred Day is hosted at Comerica’s corporate operations campus, which has been operational since its recent opening.
The collaboration with Iron Mountain and ISR provides a unique opportunity for residents, small business owners, and nonprofit organizations to discard sensitive documents and electronic devices safely. In addition to this, the event also focuses on combating local hunger by collecting non-perishable donations for those in need.
Steve Davis, Comerica Bank's Michigan Market President, highlighted the importance of this day, stating, "This event enables individuals and businesses to protect their confidential information from identity theft. With fraud attempts becoming more prevalent, it’s essential for everyone to actively safeguard their data, whether it be paper documents or electronic files.”
Last year, the Shred Day saw remarkable participation, processing over 1,100 vehicles while successfully destroying nearly 169,000 pounds of paper. Simultaneously, about 17,000 pounds of electronic waste were recycled, promoting eco-friendliness amidst critical information security.
Shred Day goes beyond just data protection; it contributes significantly to sustainability efforts and food security initiatives in the region. Previous events have led to community members donating thousands of non-perishable food items and cash donations that together resulted in more than 28,000 meals provided to those in need.
"Comerica’s Shred Day is more than just a recycling event. It's a community effort to reduce food insecurity while promoting responsible recycling practices. We are dedicated to serving our local community by fostering relationships and supporting initiatives that positively influence lives," said Davis.
Over its 15 years, the Shred Day initiative in metro Detroit has resulted in approximately 1.3 million pounds of shredded documents being converted into recycled pulp. This sustainable practice notably generates significantly less pollution and conserves water compared to traditional paper manufacturing processes.
Since introducing electronics recycling to the event in 2016, Shred Day has successfully processed around 78,000 pounds of computer-related e-waste, contributing to environmental conservation efforts.
Additionally, the involvement of Gleaners Community Food Bank over the past decade has highlighted the importance of food donations, collectively raising significant funds that have led to the donation of over 95,000 meals to families needing assistance.
This year, those wishing to attend the event should arrive via the designated route to ensure safety and efficiency in traffic management. Participants are encouraged to remain in their vehicles as volunteers assist with the unloading of items.
As part of the recycling initiative, ISR is responsible for not only shredding documents but also responsibly managing computer equipment disposal. Acceptable items range from CPUs and laptops to peripherals like mice and keyboards.
During this event, Gleaners Community Food Bank will be on-site, ready to accept food and monetary contributions. It’s an opportunity for all involved to impact their community positively.
Individuals should consider shredding any documents with sensitive information that they no longer need. Disposing of items like outdated medical records, tax documents, and financial statements can protect against identity theft and unauthorized access.
Comerica Bank has been a pillar in the community for over 175 years, committed to serving the needs of its customers and enhancing the lives of Michigan residents. Through programs like Metro Detroit Shred Day, Comerica continues to provide essential services while promoting sustainability and community support.
