Innovative Student Entrepreneur Wins National Challenge in NYC
Lucio Hightower-Rojas Takes Top Honors at National Competition
In an exciting event held recently in New York, Lucio Hightower-Rojas emerged as the champion of the National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, organized by the global nonprofit Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). This remarkable competition saw Hightower-Rojas competing against more than 40 regional finalists, each showcasing their entrepreneurial spirit in an effort to pitch their innovative ideas.
A Prestigious Platform for Young Entrepreneurs
This national challenge, generously sponsored by the Citi Foundation along with Ernst & Young (EY US), highlighted a range of brilliant business concepts from participants. Additionally, PayPal and Santander contributed to the event, ensuring that all aspiring entrepreneurs could attend and showcase their talents. The Ralph Lauren Corporate Foundation also played a crucial role by sponsoring travel for many of the participants.
Scholar Brilliance: A Game-Changing Idea
Lucio's winning business concept, Scholar Brilliance, is a revolutionary AI-driven platform designed to assist students in enhancing their essay writing skills, task management, and tracking achievements throughout the scholarship application process. His innovative approach to tackling educational challenges earned him a substantial reward of $10,000 and an exclusive 45-minute mentorship session with Daymond John of FUBU fame, which is an incredible opportunity for burgeoning entrepreneurs.
Recognizing Notable Runners-Up
In addition to Hightower-Rojas, two other brilliant minds were recognized for their outstanding ideas. Solonia Allen from Los Angeles Urban League won with her concept called Almndmlk, while Jessica Kahn from Cooper City High School in Florida presented her venture, DocBox. Each runner-up was awarded $2,500, which they can use to nurture their businesses or fulfill educational aspirations.
Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators
The NFTE National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge not only celebrates the achievements of these young entrepreneurs but also emphasizes the need for creative solutions to real-world problems. Dr. J.D. LaRock, President and CEO of NFTE, remarked on the innovative ideas presented by this year's competitors, highlighting themes of accessibility, sustainability, and social consciousness—all of which are critical issues in today’s society.
A Salute to Previous Winners
Among the honorees at this event was Naije'e Hanley, a 21-year-old NFTE alumna from the Class of 2019, awarded the Inclusive Innovator accolade for her entrepreneurial venture, Big Gurls Move. This initiative seeks to provide dance classes and apparel specifically designed for plus-sized women, who are often underrepresented in the dance community. Now an ovarian cancer survivor, Hanley is dedicated to utilizing dance to promote healing and wellness.
Dynamic Judges and Supporters
The final round of competition featured prominent judges, including esteemed entrepreneurs and business leaders who evaluated each pitch on its merit and impact. Notable figures included Kacie Lehman, VP of Brand Partnerships at Independent Artists Group, and Tony Frazier, CEO at LeoLabs, among others who contributed to the success of this inspirational event.
A Commitment to Young Entrepreneurs
NFTE remains committed to empowering youth from underserved communities through its programs focused on entrepreneurship education. The organization, which has served over a million students globally since its inception in 1987, provides tools and resources vital for young innovators to take charge of their futures.
