Generative adversarial networks consist of two main components: a generator and a discriminator. Lead by Assistant Professor Minhyeok Lee from the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, the Chung-Ang team introduced PMF-GAN, a fresh perspective on GAN development. Dr. Lee likened the process to training an artist, with careful guidance essential to avoid repetitive output. To tackle mode collapse, the new model enhances the discriminator's function, promoting a diverse range of outputs.
Key Innovations of the PMF-GAN Model
The groundbreaking PMF-GAN model includes two vital enhancements: kernel optimization and histogram transformation. First, kernel optimization allows the discriminator to better differentiate between the generated and real data, combating issues like gradient vanishing which often plague traditional models. This process leverages mathematical functions to transform the data into high-dimensional spaces, facilitating pattern recognition even in complex scenarios.
Secondly, the use of histogram transformation refines the analysis of the discriminator's output. By minimizing differences between transformed distributions of real and generated data, the model aims for optimal accuracy through what is termed PMF distance. This methodology introduces significant flexibility, allowing PMF-GAN to adapt seamlessly to various data types and objectives.

By employing these advancements, PMF-GAN has demonstrated superior performance in various tests, achieving improvements over legacy models in key metrics such as image quality. For instance, in experiments conducted with the Animal FacesHQ dataset, PMF-GAN exhibited impressive enhancements of 56.9% in inception score and 61.5% in Fréchet inception distance.
