Infrasense Enhances MSE Walls Through Advanced Radar Technology

Infrasense Innovates Nondestructive Testing Techniques
A total of 85 structures were measured using ground penetrating radar (GPR) to determine and map void space values of facing panels and wire face mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls along each structure. The aim was to identify key values including offset, distance, height, and void space for each MSE wall.
Importance of GPR in Structural Evaluation
Infrasense undertook a significant task to measure and quantify the void space between the back of the facing panels and the front of wire face MSE retaining walls across 85 designated structures. These retaining walls play a crucial role in supporting various large interstate structures such as bridge overpasses, on- and off-ramp walls, and extensive sections of pavement. Thanks to our advanced ground penetrating radar (GPR) system, a comprehensive survey and analysis of void spaces were made possible.
Methodology of Data Collection
Using a high-resolution handheld GPR system, data was collected from multiple mobilizations with a 2.7 GHz all-in-one GPR unit, allowing for scanning from ground level to heights of 30 feet. This thorough data collection followed precise protocols; for longer structures, scans were taken about two feet apart horizontally from the base of the wall to the coping beam, while narrower or uniquely shaped structures saw scans using vertical traverses.
Detailed Measurement Techniques
Infrasense engineers carried out direct measurements of void space, ensuring at least one drill location per evaluated structure. For structures exceeding 200 feet in length, measurements were made at several locations spaced approximately 200 feet apart. Following the measurement process, epoxy grout was injected into the drill holes to prevent water ingress, and all locations and their respective measurements were recorded. This data was crucial for the calibration of GPR signal velocity and void space calculations.
Analysis and Presentation of Data
The collected GPR data underwent meticulous analysis to quantify void space thickness, with results exported into spreadsheet formats for graphical analysis. The calculations for void thickness were derived using the known velocity of air alongside the travel-time measured between the back of the facing panels and the MSE retaining walls' front surface. Direct drill hole measurements were utilized to refine velocity calculations for each structure.
Creating Comprehensive Reports
The finalized spreadsheets were instrumental in building representative void space histograms for each structure, wherein statistical values of maximum and minimum void space, as well as average and measured wall thickness, were established. This thorough documentation ensures transparency and aids future maintenance efforts.
