Impending Price Increases on Medications in the U.S. Market

Impending Price Increases on Medications in the U.S. Market

Upcoming Price Increases on Medications in the U.S.

By Michael Erman

Drugmakers are set to increase the prices of over 250 branded medications, including well-known treatments like Pfizer's COVID-19 drug Paxlovid and Bristol Myers Squibb's cancer therapies. According to an analysis from a healthcare research firm, these increases will take effect on January 1, 2025.

Notably, the majority of these price increases will be below 10%. The median increase for the involved medications is projected at 4.5%, mirroring the overall median for price hikes observed last year.

Understanding Price Adjustments

The prices mentioned are the list prices, which do not account for the various rebates and discounts that pharmacy benefit managers negotiate. Over recent years, pharmaceutical companies have been scaling back on significant price increases due to backlash and public scrutiny.

As noted by 3 Axis President, Antonio Ciaccia, drugmakers have limited room for price growth, thus increasing launch prices has become a more viable option amidst stricter penalties for recurring hikes.

Trends in New Drug Pricing

Recent analyses indicate that pharmaceutical firms introduced new medications in the U.S. at average prices that are about 35% higher than those launched in the previous year, indicating an upward trend in market costs.

The rise from 140 drug price increases announced at the end of the previous year to over 250 this year reflects a substantial shift in the pricing strategy of these companies.

Competitors Adjusting Their Prices

In addition to price hikes, some companies are reducing prices. For instance, Merck & Co plans to align the list prices of its diabetes medications, Januvia and Janumet, more closely with their net prices.

The U.S. Leads in Prescription Drug Costs

The United States is known for paying more for prescription medications compared to other countries. With the ever-changing landscape of healthcare, various stakeholders, including legislators, are aiming to lower drug costs by addressing the roles of intermediaries in the healthcare system.

Future Price Increases Expected

As January progresses, further price increases from various other drugmakers are anticipated, continuing the trend established in previous years where January is historically a significant month for price adjustments.

Among the companies with notable price hikes, Pfizer tops the list with over 60 drugs affected. The pharmaceutical giant has enacted a 3% increase on Paxlovid, in addition to price hikes ranging between 3% and 5% on several other medications such as Nurtec for migraines and various cancer treatments.

A company representative emphasized that Pfizer's average list price increase remains below the rate of inflation, contributing positively towards ongoing drug development efforts while managing operational costs.

Analyzing Specific Drug Price Changes

Bristol Myers also raised prices for its cancer therapies, with Abecma and Breyanzi seeing increases of 6% and 9%, respectively. These personalized treatments, integral for patients battling blood cancer, come at a high price point, reflecting substantial investment in their development.

Sanofi's recent price increases on vaccines have ranged between 2.9% and 9%, showcasing a varied approach to price adjustments within the industry.

Severity of Price Increases

According to the findings from 3 Axis, some of the sharpest increases were noted with Leadiant Pharmaceuticals, whose price adjustments on the drug Matulane for Hodgkin's disease surged by approximately 15%, while the eye drops Cystaran saw an increase of around 20%.

Responses from Leadiant and Sanofi regarding these substantial adjustments have yet to be disclosed, but the industry continues to evolve in response to market demands and regulatory pressures.
