FirstEnergy's New Initiatives to Boost Jobs and Economy

FirstEnergy's Commitment to Job Creation and Economic Growth

1,200-megawatt natural gas power plant and utility-scale solar planned to help ensure reliable power, generation jobs and support growth

The construction of a 1,200-megawatt combined-cycle natural gas plant proposed by FirstEnergy in West Virginia is projected to generate over 3,260 jobs along with an estimated $68 million in state and local tax revenue. This ambitious plan was highlighted by FirstEnergy's Board Chair, President, and CEO Brian X. Tierney.

During a recent event at Harrison Power Station, attended by state officials, business leaders, and community representatives, Tierney emphasized the company's commitment to enhancing energy reliability and economic opportunity through this new gas plant and an additional 70 megawatts of solar power.

"This planned generation is a promise to maintain manageable energy costs, ensure reliability during peak demand periods, and promote local investment and job growth," Tierney stated. "We're focused on supporting West Virginia families, workers, and industries for the long term."

Job Opportunities in the Construction Sector

FirstEnergy’s subsidiaries, Mon Power and Potomac Edison, are gearing up to submit plans to the state’s Public Service Commission in the near future. They have two potential paths for the new gas generation project: either collaborating with another company to build and transfer the project or independently constructing it with teams of experts.

Both options aim to generate jobs and tax revenues. According to a study from West Virginia University Bureau of Business and Economic Research, the plant's ongoing operations could support nearly 2,200 direct and indirect jobs along with approximately $85.9 million annually in state and local tax revenue. This includes the creation of permanent, specialized jobs at the facility, as well as hundreds of roles in the local natural gas sector.

Ensuring Energy Reliability and Economic Advancement

Tierney noted that the new gas generation facility will collaborate with existing power plants to provide consistent and reliable energy for customers. This will contribute to a strong energy future in the region.

"The new plant will operate harmoniously with our established energy infrastructure, including both the Harrison Power Station and the Ft. Martin Power Station," he explained. "It will support a balanced energy mix, utilizing West Virginia's vast resources to cater to the state's energy needs."

This initiative also focuses on attracting energy-intensive industries to the area, helping to establish West Virginia as a hub for data centers, advanced manufacturing, and innovative business ventures. Tierney highlighted the importance of showcasing West Virginia as a promising location for investment and growth.

Upgrading Infrastructure for Future Demands

In addition to creating new energy generation, FirstEnergy is actively working to enhance existing electrical infrastructure by improving transmission lines, reinforcing poles and wires, and adopting advanced grid technologies. This modernization effort aims to build a resilient electrical system throughout West Virginia.

"Our extensive commitment to West Virginia’s future includes an investment of $5.2 billion in infrastructure enhancements, workforce training, processes, and facilities from 2025 to 2029. Pending regulatory approval for our new generation project, we expect to invest an additional $2.5 billion which will further accelerate regional economic growth and opportunity, " stated Tierney.

Aligning with State Energy Objectives

The proposed generation expansion aligns with the state's broader "50 by 50" initiative aimed at boosting energy capacity to 50 gigawatts by the year 2050. This strategy places West Virginia in a leading position in energy production and innovation.

Tierney praised the governor's forward-thinking energy strategy, affirming that FirstEnergy shares a vision of maintaining West Virginia’s status as a national energy production leader.
