Essential Steps to Shield Your Baby from RSV This Winter
Essential Steps to Shield Your Baby from RSV This Winter
The American Lung Association shares crucial measures to combat severe RSV in young children.
Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, affects individuals of all ages, but it is particularly dangerous for infants. Almost every child is likely to contract RSV by their second birthday, making it a leading cause of hospitalization among younger populations. With the winter season approaching, the American Lung Association has initiated a campaign aimed at educating parents and caregivers about effective protective measures against severe RSV illness and potential hospitalization.
In recent recommendations from health authorities, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two preventive strategies for reducing the risks of RSV infection in infants and young children have been emphasized. These include administering a preventive RSV antibody intended for at-risk infants and receiving an RSV vaccine during specific weeks of pregnancy. Data collected during the 2023-24 RSV season has shown that both strategies have proven to be safe and effective in minimizing hospitalization due to RSV.
"RSV can manifest in mild symptoms similar to those of a common cold in infants, but it also poses severe health risks that can lead to hospital admissions," states Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association. "The availability of proven preventive options this season is a significant advancement. We strongly encourage pregnant individuals, as well as parents and caregivers, to consult their healthcare providers about how they can safeguard their babies against severe RSV illness."
The preventive antibody recommended for young children at high risk is designed as an injection that provides an additional layer of defense against RSV infections. This immunization offers specially formulated RSV antibodies directly to children to combat the virus. It is essential to note that preventive antibodies are distinct from vaccines; whereas vaccines prompt the immune system to create its own antibodies, preventive antibodies deliver them directly. They are not intended for children who are already suffering from RSV illness.
This antibody is advised for all infants under the age of 8 months currently experiencing or facing their initial RSV season. Additionally, some at-risk young children aged 8 to 19 months, including those with chronic lung conditions, should receive this antibody during their second RSV season. Just one dose can provide protective effects lasting for at least five months, making administration from October through March crucial for effective protection.
Another recommended preventive measure to lower the risk of severe illness in infants involves administering the RSV vaccine during weeks 32 through 36 of pregnancy that typically occurs from September to January. When a pregnant individual receives this vaccine, protective proteins, or antibodies, are transferred to the baby. This protection can extend for approximately six months following birth, which is a critical period when infants are most vulnerable to RSV. It’s vital that all infants are safeguarded through one of the aforementioned options.
Understanding RSV
RSV transmits between individuals through close contact, particularly via respiratory secretions from coughs and sneezes, or through contaminated surfaces such as toys and doorknobs. Most people, including infants, will experience mild symptoms akin to the common cold; however, some may encounter severe complications that can threaten their life. It is essential for anyone who interacts with an infant to prioritize health and hygiene.
With these considerations in mind, parents and caregivers of at-risk children are urged to adopt proactive measures, including:
- Avoiding close contact with sick individuals
- Covering coughs and sneezes with tissues
- Regular hand washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
- Sanitizing frequently touched surfaces
- Staying home when feeling unwell and minimizing contact with others
- Avoiding the sharing of cups, bottles, or toys
This season, the American Lung Association is collaborating with Sanofi to enhance awareness among expectant parents of infants and toddlers about RSV symptoms, preventive measures, and the importance of discussing protective options with healthcare providers.
