Enefit Green Reports Significant Growth in Renewable Energy Production
Enefit Green's Electric Production Surges in September and Q3
Enefit Green reported impressive production numbers for September, generating 141 GWh of electricity, marking a remarkable 48.3% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Overall, the third quarter saw Enefit Green's electricity production rise by 31.8%, amounting to 342.1 GWh. This growth is largely attributed to new additions to the wind and solar farm portfolio. However, these impressive figures fell short by approximately 109 GWh against earlier projections, primarily due to the slower-than-anticipated ramp-up of the Sopi-Tootsi wind farm and unfavorable wind conditions.
Boost in Wind Energy Production
In September, Enefit Green's wind energy output surged by 65% year-on-year, reaching 120 GWh. This notable increase can be largely credited to the new wind farms developed in Lithuania and Finland. Roughly 10% of the wind energy production for September stemmed from the Sopi-Tootsi wind farm, which is gradually coming online. The delayed commissioning of this particular site has notably impacted the Q3 production outlook, contributing a shortfall of 68.5 GWh.
Wind Conditions Across Regions
Although the average wind speeds in Lithuania and Finland showed improvement in September, registering 6.1 and 8.1 m/s respectively (compared to 5.7 and 6.6 m/s in September 2023), Estonia experienced only modest wind conditions at 5.4 m/s, below last year’s figures. Across the overall portfolio, the average wind speed dropped to 5.8 m/s, resulting in a production impact of -6.4 GWh.
Third Quarter Observations
Reviewing the entire third quarter, the wind conditions were less favorable, with the average wind speed averaging 5.4 m/s in Estonia and 5.6 m/s in Lithuania, creating a production impact of -20.7 GWh. Conversely, the Tolpanvaara site in Finland benefited from good conditions, achieving an average wind speed of 6.9 m/s, which positively affected production by +10.8 GWh.
Solar Energy Production Growth
In regards to solar energy, production figures also recorded a positive trend, reaching 9 GWh in September, which translates to an 18% year-on-year increase. The overall production for Q3 hit 30.9 GWh, once again an 18% rise, primarily fueled by the new solar installations coming online. Weather conditions further contributed an additional +0.7 GWh though the delays in starting new solar farms in Latvia led to a shortfall of -3.8 GWh in anticipated production.
Decline in Cogeneration Output
In contrast, the cogeneration sector experienced a downturn, with electricity and heat production dropping by 19.0% and 19.5% year-on-year for September, respectively recording 11.9 GWh and 37.8 GWh. The drop was significantly influenced by the previous year's high reference standards, which included three biomass-fired cogeneration units that have since been divested.
Q3 Cogeneration Figures
When looking at the third quarter outcomes, cogeneration production decreased by 30.3% in electricity and 29.9% in heat energy, totaling 25.8 GWh and 80.5 GWh, respectively. The challenges faced were exacerbated by extended maintenance on the Iru CHP plant and several unplanned outages due to technical complications, leading to nearly 163 hours of downtime that negatively affected the electricity production by -2.7 GWh.
Adjusted Q4 Production Forecast
Looking ahead, Enefit Green has recalibrated its Q4 electricity production forecast from an earlier projected 753 GWh down to 643 GWh, still showcasing a significant 56% increase compared to Q4 outcomes from the previous year. The adjustments are primarily due to ongoing delays in activating production at the Sopi-Tootsi and Kelme I wind farms. Given these production discrepancies, the company has strategically engaged in electricity purchase transactions for the upcoming quarter to mitigate the risk associated with electricity purchasing for base load Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
Management Insights on Production Results
Innar Kaasik, COO of Enefit Green, shared insights on the Q3 results, stating, "The commencement of new wind farms presents multiple challenges, and consequently, it has slowed our electricity production growth. However, our operational wind farms in Estonia and Lithuania have maintained high availability, and the Tolpanvaara wind farm in Finland has exceeded expectations for the second consecutive month, contributing +1.6 GWh to our production overall. Unfortunately, various production limitations and downgrades in Q3 generated the most significant impacts in recent times, totaling -26.4 GWh — over 65% attributed to negative pricing, particularly impacting the Finnish Tolpanvaara facility. Furthermore, we encountered grid-related challenges, with nearly 24% of reductions connected to transmission grid issues from mandated grid tests and maintenance work at associated facilities."
