Empowering Coffee Farms: A Green Transition with MT Solar

Empowering Coffee Farms with Sustainable Solutions
In the heart of Puerto Rico, innovation and philanthropy come together to transform a family coffee farm into a model for energy independence. This remarkable change showcases a cutting-edge agrivoltaic system designed to withstand hurricanes while promoting sustainability.
Hacienda Berdiel: Overcoming Challenges
The owner of Hacienda Berdiel Torres, Miguel Berdiel, faced significant challenges on his coffee farm. Even with perfect conditions for coffee cultivation and plans for a hydroponic greenhouse, high energy costs and the devastating effects of a hurricane severely impacted operational growth. As obstacles mounted, plans to provide local employment and fresh produce to the community came to a standstill.
Collaboration for Change
To tackle these issues, Miguel's farm became a part of a significant agrivoltaic research project, partnering with organizations such as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the nonprofit Twende Solar. The aim was to explore new energy solutions for agriculture in hurricane-prone areas.
Innovative Agrivoltaics System Design
Recognizing the potential at Hacienda Berdiel, Twende Solar reached out to MT Solar to devise efficient pole-mounted solar systems that could be installed at a challenging elevation of 3000 feet. The design needed to accommodate all farming activities and stand firm against hurricane conditions, ensuring that energy resilience would enhance the farm's sustainability.
Engineering for the Future
Jamie Blum, a design and sales engineer at MT Solar, emphasized the team's commitment to tackling engineering challenges: "Designing for such high wind loads required innovative thinking to achieve adequate clearance above the coffee trees. It’s thrilling to meet our clients' needs even under extreme circumstances."
Implementation of the Agrivoltaics System
In July, the team successfully installed a robust 9.8kW solar system at the farm. MT Solar supported this by providing six durable solar mounts, each with the capacity to hold four 410W modules elevated 15 feet above ground. Collaborating firms, including Aireko Energy Group and GRID Alternatives Puerto Rico, completed essential groundwork and system assembly. Additionally, EG4 Electronics from Texas contributed an inverter and batteries to establish a 40kWh energy bank.
The Future of Hacienda Berdiel
With the operational solar system now fully functional, Hacienda Berdiel is gearing up to reopen its hydroponic greenhouse and recommence its mission to provide locally grown food. The installed system paves the way toward energy independence, assuring stability despite unpredictable weather and high energy costs.
Research and Development for a Sustainable Blueprint
This agrivoltaics initiative aims not just at operational renewal but also at setting new benchmarks for similar systems in hurricane-affected areas. As part of ongoing efforts, researchers will assess system performance and crop productivity over the next two years, crafting a blueprint for future installations.
