Duke Energy Florida Progress Updates After Hurricane Helene
Updates on Power Restoration Efforts
Duke Energy Florida is actively working on power restoration for communities affected by Hurricane Helene. The recovery efforts are focused on regions that suffered the most damage, particularly as a result of severe storm impacts. Areas such as Madison and Pasco counties experienced significant outages, while efforts are underway to address challenges faced in other regions.
Current Status of Restoration
As of the latest assessments, Madison County has seen substantial damage due to fallen trees and branches, resulting in approximately 750 customers still without electricity, despite over 8,700 customers having their service restored. In Pasco County, the damage stemmed mainly from a historic storm surge, leaving around 2,700 customers still without power while nearly 68,900 have had their service reinstated. Pinellas County, also affected by storm surge, reports approximately 9,600 customers still without power, although restoration efforts have successfully brought service back to about 409,800 residents.
Outages and Challenges
Importantly, these figures do not account for an estimated 15,000 customers who may be unable to receive power due to considerable damage to their properties. The impact on homes and businesses poses an ongoing challenge for restoration teams.
Community Impact and Communication
“All of our customers – every single one – matter to us,” said Melissa Seixas, the state president of Duke Energy Florida. She emphasized gratitude for the community's patience during these recovery efforts and reaffirmed the company's commitment to restoring power to those capable of receiving it.
Progress in Barrier Islands
Duke Energy has established a command center to enhance response strategies, particularly in the barrier islands of Pinellas County. Crews have reported encouraging progress in restoring power across various areas:
North Barrier Island
- Main power lines leading to Clearwater Beach have been energized.
- Power has been restored to all large hotels along the beachfront.
- Island Estates has seen its overhead lines energized, with six out of 33 underground transformers also back online.
- Condos east of Clearwater Pass have had service restored, although one building is still offline due to damage in its meter room.
Middle Barrier Island
- The primary power lines from Sand Key to Indian Shores are operational.
- Power lines from Park Boulevard to Treasure Island are now energized.
- Restoration efforts have successfully reinstated service to condos on the northern section of Sand Key.
South Barrier Island
- Power lines from Pinellas Bayway to Blind's Pass bridge have been energized.
- Restorations have been completed in Pass-a-Grille and Vina Del Mar areas.
