Comstock Validates Record Renewable Fuel Yields
Renewable Fuel Conversion Yields
Comstock Inc. (NYSE: LODE) and its subsidiary, Comstock Fuels Corporation, which specializes in transforming woody biomass into low-carbon renewable fuels, have successfully completed testing that confirms renewable fuel conversion yields of up to 125 gallons per dry ton of woody biomass, measured on a gasoline gallon equivalent basis.
Innovative Fuel Solutions
Comstock Fuels offers cutting-edge lignocellulosic biomass refining solutions that produce top-tier renewable fuels, including ethanol, gasoline, renewable diesel, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). These processes are both robust and scalable, designed to fractionate various species of woody biomass into intermediates suitable for fuel conversion. This includes Comstock Fuels’ proprietary hydrodeoxygenated Bioleum Oil (HBO), which meets the standards for advanced renewable fuels production as outlined in ASTM D1655. Additionally, Comstock Fuels utilizes variations of well-established hydroprocessing and cracking technologies to create SAF and other advanced renewable fuels compliant with D7566.
Demonstrating Yield Achievements
While yields and carbon intensities can vary due to several factors, a validated baseline yield of 125 GGE and a carbon intensity of 15 were achieved using a blend of hardwood feedstock species, without any emissions capture.
Corrado De Gasperis, the executive chairman and CEO of Comstock, emphasized that this achievement is crucial for securing financing and constructing the company’s recently announced commercial demonstration facility, which will have a capacity of 50,000 TPY.
Future Prospects for Renewable Fuels
Comstock Fuels is investigating the modular integration of established processes to capture and convert biogenic carbon emissions into additional Bioleum-derived fuels. This innovation could potentially raise yields to 150 GGE, which would represent over 80% of the theoretical maximum yield achievable from woody biomass.
De Gasperis pointed out that these advancements are the result of more than two decades of research and development, aimed at achieving cost parity with fossil fuels to promote the decarbonization of global transportation. Plans are currently in motion to finalize engineering and site selection for the commercial facility.
