Celebrating the Vibrant Spirit of DeafBlind Awareness Month

Embracing an Important Milestone in Canada
As we step into June, it's time to acknowledge a remarkable journey that began a decade ago. This month signifies ten years since the official recognition of June as National Deafblind Awareness Month in Canada. It provides a beautiful chance to honor the invaluable contributions of Canadians living with deafblindness.
The Deafblind Community in Numbers
Statistics from recent reports indicate that more than 602,000 Canadians aged 15 and older identify as deafblind, which makes up over 2% of the national population. Among these individuals, it’s noteworthy that more than half, around 314,260, are aged 65 and older. As these numbers reflect, there’s a pressing need for increased awareness and inclusion for everyone within the deafblind community.
Engaging in Creative Expression
This June, DeafBlind Ontario Services is excited to participate in the worldwide initiative #CreateAndConnect, organized by Deafblind International. The aim of this campaign is to promote engagement through creative activities that foster awareness, joy, and unity. Our chosen method for this expression is Yarn bombing, a colorful and tactile art form that exemplifies the togetherness and artistic skills of individuals who are deafblind.
What is Yarn Bombing?
Yarn bombing is an innovative way of adorning public spaces with colorful knitted or crocheted works. These installations are not just visually captivating; they symbolize the interconnectedness of individuals, communities, and the world at large. It's a reminder of the beauty that diversity brings to our society.
Voices from the Community
Individuals like Steven, who is deafblind and part of the Supported Independent Living (SIL) program, have taken a crucial role in organizing yarn bombing displays. With the assistance of his intervenors, Steven actively contributes to raising awareness about DeafBlind Ontario Services and the deafblind community. He states, "It’s important for people to learn more about DeafBlind Ontario Services and the deafblind community. Awareness directly helps people who are deafblind."
The SIL Program: Fostering Independence
Our SIL program aims to empower individuals who are deafblind and those with developmental disabilities. With professional support from trained intervenors, participants enjoy assistance that enables them to live semi-independently. These intervenors act as the “eyes” and “ears” for the individuals, using the sense of touch to facilitate communication and provide essential support. This outreach is crucial in helping people who are deafblind flourish in their environments.
