Bloomberg Announces Target Weights for 2025 Commodity Index
Bloomberg Commodity Index 2025 Target Weights Announced
Bloomberg has unveiled the target weights and composition for the Bloomberg Commodity Index (BCOM) for the year 2025. This widely followed index, which serves as a benchmark for the commodities market, has an estimated Assets Under Management (AUM) of $102 billion. The index comprises 24 exchange-traded contracts related to physical commodities, and the new target weights will take effect in January during the specified roll period.
No Changes in Commodity Listings
As part of this year’s reconstitution of the BCOM, there will be no additions or deletions of commodities. However, it is notable that Lead (LL) will continue to be included in the 2025 index, which adheres to the criteria set out by the BCOM Methodology. For the first time, Cocoa has also met the required threshold and is expected to be included in 2026, pending continued performance next year.
Key Weight Changes in Commodities
Brent Crude Oil has topped the list with the most significant weight increase, rising to 8.03%. This positions it above Natural Gas, which has been the highest-weighted component in the Energy sector. This marks a notable milestone for Brent Crude Oil since it has held this top position since its inclusion in 2012. Despite a minimal decrease to 30.01% in 2025, Energy continues to dominate as the largest commodity group in the BCOM.
Performance Insights from BCOM's Weights
In addition to oil, agriculture commodities such as Grains, Softs, and Livestock are expected to see increases in their weights for 2025. Conversely, Industrial Metals will experience its lowest weight since the BCOM’s inception, now at 15.1%. Precious Metals are also facing declines, particularly Gold, which has decreased for the third consecutive year since its peak in 2022, bringing the overall weight of Precious Metals down to 18.8%.
Comparative Weights and Composition
The target weights of all components of the BCOM for 2025 reveal a trend of increasing weights in Softs, Livestock, and Grains, with notable decreases in Energy, Precious Metals, and Industrial Metals. Bloomberg has clarified that the target weights are calculated based on a robust framework which balances liquidity and production data, ensuring that no single group exceeds 33% and that no single commodity surpasses 25% of the index.
These adjustments reflect the ongoing dynamics of the global commodity markets and the necessity for sustainable investment strategies that accommodate changing demand and supply scenarios.
