X Financial's Q1 2026 Results: Revenue Slumps

X Financial's Q1 2026 Results: Revenue Slumps

Revenue Takes a Nosedive

Well, it's no secret by now that X Financial's (NYSE: XYF) first quarter of 2026 wasn't exactly a blockbuster. Total net revenue sank to RMB1.18 billion, a stunning 39.3% year-over-year drop. That's a pretty big slide even for a veteran like me who's seen some market storms. The fintech's story is simple—they've tightened credit standards, likely trying to steer clear of bad loans, but it hammered their loan facilitation revenues.

Loan Origination: A Shrinking Trail

Here's the kicker: the total loan volume facilitated hit RMB14.63 billion, down nearly 36% from just the previous quarter and a walloping 58.4% compared to last year. That's the kind of drop that makes you double-check if the numbers got mixed up. The leadership, particularly their President, Kent Li, keeps hammering home that it was all about focusing on 'high-quality origination'. Seems the price of discipline came with a heavy toll.

"While profitability was significantly impacted by higher provisions and narrower margins, we believe these actions appropriately position the Company for the challenging environment ahead," stated Mr. Li.

Income and Delinquency: A Tough Blend

When you look at the net income, it took a nosedive to RMB37.9 million—a painful 91.7% drop year-over-year. Higher credit-related provisions played their part, along with zapped loan revenue. Now, if you turn your head to the delinquency rates, we're eyeing two sides of a coin. Loans 31–60 days past due showed a slight improvement to 2.61%, which is not too shabby. But, on the flip side, loans 91–180 days delinquent ballooned to 9.95%. That's a bitter pill, explained away by older delinquent loans dragging the number up, rather than fresh rotten eggs.

Operating Costs and Margins: A Mixed Bag

Looking into the operating expenses, there's some surprising light amidst the gloom. Operating margins nudged up to 12.0%, which, frankly, is miles better than the 1.4% scrape in the previous quarter. Still, let's remember they're far from the enviable 29.6% margins last year. The CFO, Frank Fuya Zheng, preached the mantra of capital management and cost discipline, trying to brace the business for whatever might come.

Repurchase and Regulatory Landscape

On the flip side of the coin, there's something brewing with their capital return strategy. X Financial's been on a repurchase rally, buying back roughly 1.8 million ADSs, coughing up around US$8.2 million dollars. That's all under their US$100 million program.

And lest we forget, the regulatory minefield in China keeps shifting, with authorities casting a tighter net over internet-based lending. It's unpredictable, uncertain, and precarious. The management admits visibility into the scope of future regulations is pretty limited, which is poor news for any attempt at forecasts or projections.

Final Observations

In the end, X Financial's story this quarter is all about painful adjustment—a portrait of necessary cuts, prudent origination, and caution against delinquency. Sure, it gives them a survival strategy, but if you're eyeing NYSE: XYF, there's caution in every shadow. Studying the earnings call or any analyst's take on their prospects might shed more light. Until then, we're navigating in murky waters.
