Workday Beats Q4 Estimates but Faces Price Target Cuts

Workday Beats Q4 Estimates but Faces Price Target Cuts

Workday’s Q4 Earnings Beat But Concerns Loom

The numbers rolled in, and they showed Workday putting a solid foot forward. Total revenues shot up to $2.532 billion, just edging past the consensus estimate of $2.52 billion. Yet, there’s a ton of smoke that suggests this fire might not be roaring as strong as it seems.

Mixed Analyst Views

Guggenheim Securities wasn’t thrilled, pointing out a troubling trend where New Annual Contract Value (ACV) took a nosedive, declining 8% year-over-year. When you see numbers like this, it raises red flags about business momentum, especially given recent management remarks on delayed deals. This isn’t just idle chatter; it’s a signal to investors that they might want to keep an eye on how this shakes out.

"By our estimates, New ACV declined 8% y/y, reflecting significant declines in momentum," DiFucci stated.

Moreover, forecasts are slipping. The company's lower guidance for subscription revenue growth in Q1 fiscal 2027 is down to 13.4%, a hair's breadth below the previously anticipated 14%. If you factor in new Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR), it’s looking even grimmer—a 70% expected decline. This isn’t the trajectory that builds investor confidence.

Sector Pressures Weighing Heavy

DA Davidson weighed in too, indicating that while results were largely on target, the slowing demand was influenced by deal delays, particularly within federal, state, local, and healthcare clients, squeezed by budget freezes. If you’re part of a cash-strapped organization, buying new software solutions might not be top of mind—this is critical for investors watching Workday’s performance in a tight market.

"Demand was impacted by deal delays from Federal, SLED, and healthcare customers among others with budget restraints," noted Schreiner from DA Davidson.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. BTIG found some good news buried in the earnings report with current remaining performance obligations (cRPO) growing 15.8%, which beat expectations slightly. Even so, this tiny win comes with an asterisk—the smallest beat since fiscal Q1 2025. That sort of egg on the face isn't what you want to show off during earnings season.

Red Flags in the Guidance

Every investor worth their salt knows guidance is crucial. Workday’s outlook for fiscal 2027 reflects a growth mid-point subscription revenue of $9.938 billion, which is now lowered to 12.5%, down from previous predictions of 13%. With margins also slipping, it’s a kind of chokehold on expectations that has many analysts shaking their heads. Reducing the non-GAAP operating margin guidance from 31.2% down to 30% isn't the kind of productivity growth we love to see.

That being said, Rosenblatt Securities chimed in with an uptick in subscription revenue of 15.7%, managing to cling onto $2.36 billion, landing just above their own guidance. However, you have to wonder about the health of this growth—Simmons from Rosenblatt pointed out that much of the acceleration was 'inorganic' and artificially inflated by one-time revenue streams. In the long run, this reliance on trickery to pump up numbers isn't sustainable. Investors might be uncomfortably biting their nails at this point.

Understanding the Price Action

Prices are telling a story of their own. After all these revelations, shares of Workday were down by a notable 3.87%, resting at $125.18 at the time of this writing. Investors are understandably jittery, watching for any signs of stabilization or further declines.

What we're seeing is a mixed bag with Workday. Earnings beat estimates, but deal delays and lowered guidance have many sitting on the fence. The market is volatile, and we all know how quickly sentiment can shift. As an investor, it's time to weigh whether the current growth can withstand the pressures ahead or if it's time to cut bait before further losses weigh down portfolios. Keeping a keen eye on deal closures will be pivotal.
