Visit Denver Nurtures Future Hospitality Leaders

Visit Denver Nurtures Future Hospitality Leaders

A Boost for Aspiring Hospitality Professionals

There's something mighty transforming about pouring dollars into the young, spirited folks who envision their future in hospitality. That's exactly what the Visit Denver Foundation is up to—pumping a crisp $160,600 this year into the veins of 48 ambitious students chasing degrees in tourism and hospitality. Since their inception in 2000, they've generously slung out close to two million bucks in scholarships, all to lay the groundwork for future excellence in this vital industry.

Investing Today for Tomorrow's Success

Richard Scharf, the president and CEO of Visit Denver, couldn't have hit the nail more on the head when he emphasized the sheer necessity of splashing cash into our industry's budding professionals. It's not just an investment; it's a make-or-break play for the sustainability of hospitality and tourism, sectors pretty much drop-kicked in the gut during the pandemic.

With Visit Denver's latest round of financial backing, each starry-eyed student gets a base scholarship of $3,200. You look at the likes of Til Proske at the University of Denver and Paxton Walker at Colorado Mesa University sinking their teeth into hospitality management—these are the folks who'll soon be steering the ship.

Expanded Support Through Named Scholarships

While base scholarships are all well and good, Visit Denver doesn't stop there. They've lined up some named scholarships this year that boast a wilder punch, each one honoring titan forces in the community. Pocky and Lisa Marranzino are lending a hand to Ana Carballo, another eager student zeroed in on hospitality management at the University of Denver. The Nicole Marsh Named Scholarship is shining a spotlight on Sarah Geffen as well, making sure no stone is left unturned in advancing the profession of these promising individuals.

“We are grateful to the generous donors who are helping shape our industry's future through the power of education,” said Richard Scharf.

Building Networks and Opening Doors

Beyond the dollars and cents, what these scholarships are really doing is setting up bridges. These financial aids connect students not only with mentors and career networks but also with hands-on opportunities in the real world. It's about sliding into the industry's door with more than just a college address on your resume; it's about stepping in with head held high, backed by industry giants.

You've got named scholarships stacked with history, like the Noel Cunningham Named Scholarship, which Sarah Grundemann will ride into her classes on baking and pastries. Noel Cunningham wasn’t just a restaurateur; he was a beacon of generosity and service in Denver's hospitality sector.

Beyond Scholarships: Workforce Development

Scholarships aren’t the end of the stew. Back in 2024, Visit Denver kicked off a campaign called “Boredom is Fired” to tackle the workforce crunch head-on by highlighting career opportunities and laying the groundwork for skill development in tourism. This ain't just fluff; it's gritty, real outreach, stretching into secondary schools and skill-based programs—places where fresh skills are honed.

Hall of Fame and Community Commitment

Making headlines is not something Visit Denver shies away from, either. This year, their 26th Annual Denver & Colorado Tourism Hall of Fame Dinner not only honored trailblazers like Rachel Benedick from Meeting Professionals International but also raked in a hefty $120,000 for the cause. That dough helps keep the flames lit for future initiatives supporting up-and-comers in the industry.

And beyond the luminaries in the Hall of Fame are those dubbed Tourism Stars, the unsung warriors turning Denver into a magnetic force for travelers. Think 16th Street and the Denver Art Museum—all key players in boosting the town’s enticement power in 2025.

The Year Ahead and Unyielding Commitment

An outfit like Visit Denver stands as a granite pillar, firm and relentless, of economic growth in this city. Celebrating 117 years: that's no measly feat. From a gum-chewin' trader's perspective, knowing we've got steady leaders laying down tracks for the next generation feels like cash in the market’s piggy bank, a wager worth every cent.
