VIS and NXP Launch VSMC Semiconductor Manufacturing Venture
Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation (VIS, TPEx 5347) and NXP Semiconductors N.V. (NXP, NASDAQ: NXPI) have taken a major step forward in the semiconductor sector by forming the VisionPower Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Pte Ltd (VSMC). This new venture is officially underway following the approval from relevant authorities, paving the way for the construction of VSMC's inaugural 300mm wafer manufacturing facility.
Overview of the VSMC Joint Venture
Initially announced in June, the VSMC project is situated in Singapore and has garnered an impressive investment of around $7.8 billion. This substantial investment highlights the companies' commitment to enhancing their manufacturing capabilities and making strides in a competitive landscape.
VIS Chairman Leuh Fang expressed his appreciation for the support from governmental and regulatory agencies in both Taiwan and Singapore. He emphasized that this venture signifies VIS’s commitment to fulfilling customer needs while expanding manufacturing capacity and diversifying its global manufacturing bases.
Alignment with NXP's Growth Strategy
NXP President and CEO Kurt Sievers praised the swift collaboration with government entities, stating that the new facility is crucial to NXP's hybrid manufacturing strategy. The establishment of this plant will strengthen NXP's ability to maintain cost efficiency and control over its supply chain, which is vital for sustainable growth.
Construction Schedule and Production Objectives
The first phase of the wafer fabrication facility is expected to commence construction in the latter half of this year, with production projected to begin by 2027. As the project advances and production targets are met, there are plans for a second phase, depending on further investments from both VIS and NXP. The new facility will focus on mixed-signal, power management, and analog products, serving the automotive, industrial, consumer, and mobile markets.
Influence on the Semiconductor Ecosystem
The transfer of technology and expertise will be bolstered by a technology licensing agreement with TSMC, enhancing VSMC's ability to meet market demands. By 2029, the facility aims to produce 55,000 300mm wafers each month, creating approximately 1,500 job opportunities and significantly contributing to both Singapore's and the global semiconductor supply chain.
