Veronika's Journey to Resilience Amidst Conflict

Veronika's Journey to Resilience Amidst Conflict

Veronika's Journey in a New World

Education Cannot Wait investments delivered by UNICEF are providing essential mental health and psychosocial support for children affected by crises, particularly in Ukraine. One of these remarkable stories is that of six-year-old Veronika, whose childhood was transformed by the ongoing conflict.

Before the war, Veronika's life was filled with joy and laughter, playing in the peaceful suburbs of Kyiv. However, when the war erupted in 2022, everything changed for her, leading her into a world of fear and uncertainty.

In her own words, Veronika recalls, "Air raid alert – it's dangerous. You grab everything, throw it in your backpack, and run to the classroom door." This experience is just a glimpse into the upheaval she faced.

Moving from Home to School

With schools closing and the sound of explosions echoing nearby, the panic in Veronika's family intensified. They hurriedly packed their belongings and ultimately left behind their home, a place filled with memories.

Following their relocation to Kyiv, Veronika enrolled in first grade, attempting to adapt to her new school. However, everything around her felt foreign and unwelcoming. Her parents recognized the struggle she was facing and opted to move her to a different school, hoping to find a better fit.

The Impact of War on Mental Health

The continuous stress from the conflict and constant relocations took a heavy toll on Veronika's mental health. Feelings of anxiety and isolation plagued her as she tried desperately to find a place where she belonged.

Fortunately, with the support from Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and UNICEF Ukraine, Veronika was provided the opportunity to reintegrate into the formal education system. This initiative allowed her to connect with peers again and heal from the academic disruptions caused by the war.

Rebuilding Confidence Through Support

Her mother, Lyubov, described the transition: "When we came to the Ukrainian school, for Veronika it was as if she landed on another planet. She was new, a stranger, and that made it really hard for her." Navigating this unfamiliar landscape was indeed a challenge.

To assist Veronika in regaining her confidence, her school offered special sessions tailored for children in similar situations. These sessions provided her a supportive environment where she could express herself and interact with peers.

Valentyna, a child psychologist dedicated to helping displaced children, explained, "We work with kids from various backgrounds, including refugees and those from disadvantaged families. The aim is to help them socialize and adjust more easily to their new circumstances." Through these sessions, Veronika slowly found her place again.

Forming Bonds and Healing Together

As Veronika re-entered the school community, she began to form friendships and experienced moments of kindness that had been absent in the earlier tumultuous months. "Veronika started making friends in the class. The children showed empathy toward one another, and through our sessions, they learned how to communicate and resolve conflicts together," Valentyna noted.

However, it is important to note that the war significantly affected education in Ukraine. Millions of children have faced disruptions, and countless schools have sustained damage or destruction. The latest estimates show that over 1,600 educational facilities have been impacted.

To address these challenges, ECW-funded initiatives in Ukraine strive to enhance learning opportunities for children impacted by crises. They aim to create safer environments, extend digital learning when necessary, and provide extensive mental health support that fosters recovery.

Veronika's Dreams of the Future

Veronika's journey illustrating her path from the shadows of war into the warmth of friendship encapsulates resilience and hope. She dreamily shares, "I like math, English, art, and physical education at school. I dream of becoming a veterinarian, singer, or actress." Her ambitions reflect the courage and determination that many children need to persevere.
