VDMA Forecasts Decline in European Machine Vision Sales

VDMA Forecasts Decline in European Machine Vision Sales

VDMA's Sales Forecast for European Machine Vision

The VDMA Machine Vision division has announced a concerning outlook for the machine vision industry in Europe, predicting a ten percent sales decline in nominal terms this year. This marks a significant deterioration compared to the April forecast of only a 3 percent drop. The challenge does not appear to ease in 2025 as the industry anticipates little to no growth during that period. However, optimism remains as new developments are expected from the upcoming trade fair, VISION.

Importance of the Manufacturing Sector

Mark Williamson, Chairman of the VDMA Machine Vision Division, notes that the manufacturing sector is pivotal for the industry, accounting for 71 percent of systems and 62 percent of components. In a recent report, it was highlighted that orders from this key sector in July were 4.3% lower than the same time last year, after adjusting for calendar discrepancies. This decline has unfortunately dampened short-term demand for machine vision products.

Long-term Industry Prospects

Despite the current slowdown, the medium to long-term outlook for the machine vision industry remains positive. This enduring success is attributed to the crucial role of machine vision technology in automation across various sectors.

Emerging Sales Areas Outside Manufacturing

The landscape for machine vision technology is evolving thanks to a broader trend toward automation. Beyond manufacturing, demand for machine vision systems has notably increased, recording a 5 percent rise, which has extended its market reach to a robust 29 percent in 2023. Key application areas where machine vision is making strides include intelligent traffic systems, accounting for 61 percent of revenue, followed by logistics and postal sorting at 20 percent, and medical equipment at 7 percent.

Shift in Component Sales

Interestingly, the demand for machine vision components is even more pronounced outside the manufacturing industry, with this segment comprising 38 percent of total sales. In particular, medical equipment stands out, capturing 34 percent of component sales, with intelligent transport systems and logistics & mail sorting following at 18 and 12 percent, respectively.

Preparing for Upcoming Events

Looking ahead, the world’s leading trade fair for machine vision, VISION, is set to take place from October 8 to 10 in Stuttgart. This event is anticipated to serve as a platform for showcasing innovations and trends within the industry, potentially reviving interest and investments in machine vision technologies.
