University of Bridgeport Showcases Robotics Competitions

FTC DECODE Qualifier and FRC REBUILT Kickoff brought hands-on STEM competition to Bridgeport, highlighting new pathways into engineering and technology careers.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont and U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal recently joined University of Bridgeport (UB) leaders and regional educators at a significant robotics event hosted on campus. This gathering allowed hundreds of middle and high school students to engage in exciting STEM challenges and take a first glance at UB’s innovative robotics space.

The event consisted of two notable competitions: FTC DECODE—a platform for teams in grades 7 to 12 to design and program classroom-scale robots to compete in alliance matches, and FRC REBUILT—the kickoff for FIRST Robotics Competition as a part of New England's kickoff celebration for the season.

Enriching the Robotics Learning Environment

The contests represented the inaugural major event held in UB's newly developed robotics hub, a project built in collaboration with Access Educational Services and NE FIRST within the Steans Advanced Manufacturing Center. This facility opened last fall alongside UB’s Interdisciplinary Emerging Technologies (IET) Lab, enhancing opportunities for hands-on STEM education, collaboration, and innovation aligned with workforce needs. The event attracted approximately 300 attendees, including nearly 250 participants and guests for the FTC qualifier, alongside 50 participants for the FRC kickoff. In total, thirteen FTC teams participated in the Bridgeport qualifier, with the FRC kickoff also streamed online for a broader audience.

Empowering Students Through Hands-On Experience

Dean Khaled Elleithy, Ph.D., commented on the exceptional talent displayed by the students, saying, "Hands-on competition gives students real-world experience in designing, building, and programming robots while cultivating critical STEM skills. These events are more than competitions; they are essential gateways to careers in engineering and technology, bridging classroom learning with practical application." He emphasized that such experiences help boost the confidence of young innovators and inspire them toward pursuing careers in STEM fields.

Throughout the day, University of Bridgeport leaders and staff actively welcomed teams, supported event logistics, and interacted with visiting families and educators. Notable community and government leaders were also present to celebrate the students and the development of the STEM pipeline in the region.

The Future of Robotics and Innovation at UB

UB President Danielle Wilken, Ed.D., expressed pride in hosting these competitions, stating, "When students bring their creativity, grit, and teamwork to challenges like these, it demonstrates what is achievable. We are honored to open our campus to these young innovators. We aspire to make these Bridgeport events an annual tradition, offering even more opportunities for teams and families to return and engage with University of Bridgeport programs, labs, and student life."
