TriNet's 2025 Workplace Insights: Trends and Innovations
Survey of over 1,000 SMB respondents highlights employee engagement, AI adoption, workplace flexibility, the most valued benefits—and more.
TriNet (NYSE: TNET), a prominent provider of comprehensive human resources solutions for small and medium-sized businesses, has released the 2025 State of the Workplace Report. This annual survey presents a dual perspective on employer and employee sentiments in the SMB landscape.
Understanding the Survey
The report is based on data collected from more than 1,000 SMB respondents, including 540 full-time employees and 500 employers from various sectors such as financial services, life sciences, nonprofit, professional services, and technology. The research, conducted by TriNet in collaboration with Qualtrics, examines vital workplace themes including employee engagement, AI adoption, work-life satisfaction, and understanding of benefits.
Key Insights from the Report
"The TriNet 2025 State of the Workplace report reveals a workplace undergoing rapid transformation, from the mainstreaming of AI to shifting expectations around workplace flexibility, engagement, and benefits," said Catherine Wragg, Chief People Officer at TriNet. "By comparing employer assumptions with employee realities, we uncover insights that SMBs must address to remain competitive." This report highlights significant trends impacting the workplace.
Employee Engagement Levels
One of the major findings is that employee engagement has increased, though not to the extent employers believe. While 47% of employers think their employees are 'extremely engaged', only a third of Gen Z employees share this view. This discrepancy suggests that employers, particularly those from older generations like Baby Boomers, may overestimate engagement levels amongst their teams.
Shifting Towards Flexibility
Workplace flexibility is increasingly becoming a norm in the current work environment. The survey notes that 26% of employers view having employees in the office three days a week as an ideal arrangement, up from 21%. However, only 14% of employees feel the same way, indicating a potential disconnect between workplace expectations and employee preferences.
AI Integration in the Workplace
AI adoption has surged, with a staggering 94% of employers and 84% of employees reporting its use in their workday. Notably, two-thirds of employees regularly utilize AI for HR tasks. Nevertheless, there is a cautious approach in sensitive areas such as offboarding and training, where the human touch remains irreplaceable.
Benefits that Matter
The report also sheds light on evolving preferences regarding workplace benefits:
Mental Health Focus
Employers are prioritizing mental health support, noting an increase in the importance of mental health coverage under their insurance plans; 'extremely important' responses rose to 37% from 28%.
Fertility Coverage Gains Importance
Fertility coverage is becoming more acknowledged, with employer ratings for its importance climbing significantly, and employee indifference toward this issue decreasing. The numbers have shifted, with employer ratings of 'extremely' and 'moderately important' reaching 29% and 31% respectively.
Childcare Assistance Alignment
Both employers and employees are increasingly aligning on the necessity of childcare assistance, with employer ratings for its importance on the rise and employees reducing their 'not at all important' responses significantly.
Employee Discounts on the Rise
There's a noticeable increase in the significance of employee discounts as well—employers' ratings for 'extremely important' have grown to 32%, and employees reporting 'moderately important' rose to 36%.
The complete 2025 State of the Workplace Report is now available and includes year-over-year comparisons, breakdowns by generation and industry, and actionable insights designed for HR leaders and business executives aiming to navigate these changes adeptly.
