"Today, I learned how to sign the alphabet, greet people, and introduce myself in sign language," Beatrice recalls, emphasizing that her training goes beyond academic skills—it is also a personal journey. Before she began her education at the Rombur National Teachers Training Institute (RNTII), she worked at Sacred Heart Primary School. Here, she noticed a significant absence of children with disabilities due to inadequate teaching resources in her area.
Breaking Barriers
Beatrice highlights the importance of inclusive education: "Several children with disabilities were often seen staying home. The lack of teachers proficient in sign language and braille was a major reason for this silence,” she reflects.

He is an 18-year-old student who faced challenges in attending school after his mobility tricycle was damaged. "This tricycle was my connection to education. It broke, and that meant I had to stop attending school," Moses recounted.
Thanks to the efforts of Disability Inclusion Facilitators from Light for the World in collaboration with Save the Children, Moses received a new tricycle—an intervention that opened the doors for him to return to school and continue his education alongside his peers.
Advocating for Educational Equity
South Sudan is among the regions where children struggle immensely to access quality education, hampered by conflict, displacement, and poverty. As many as 2.8 million children are currently out of school, with children with disabilities facing even greater obstacles.
Since 2020, ECW has been working with partners to enhance access to inclusive education for children impacted by crises. They focus on vulnerable demographics, including girls and children with disabilities. Initiatives range from scholarships and remote learning solutions to training teachers and implementing necessary child protection measures in schools.
Investment figures show that ECW has committed US$73.8 million to support these initiatives, with a significant portion aimed at addressing the most marginalized.
