Exploring Market Opportunities for 2026
I often find opportunities in the most challenging trading environments, and next year is no exception.
I've recently shared my outlook for 2026 with Maggie Lake from the Market House.
Maggie said, "It was so extensive I’m going to do a deep dive with her next month."
In the meantime, here are some themes I am currently tracking.
Key Themes to Watch
Saddle Up: According to the Chinese zodiac, 2026 is the year of the Fire Horse, which suggests that it’s time to shake off the past and prepare for what I believe will be a fast, bold, volatile, and opportunity-rich year.
Economic Resilience
Investors have been nervous about the economy, and recent payroll data indicated a slight uptick in the unemployment rate. However, I see signs of resilience in the overall market.
My modern economic family, which I created a decade ago to track the health of the economy, appears to be reviving. This index monitors one market index and five sectors, which underperformed throughout much of this year despite growth stocks rallying. The disconnect between the real economy and the financial economy has been significant, but now small caps and transportation sectors have reached all-time highs. Retail and regional banks are making a resurgence that suggests that, while stock prices may be struggling, the economy itself is in better shape than many fear.
Trading Intelligence
As a trader at heart, I not only observe macro trends but also identify potential opportunities within individual sectors. Here are some of the sectors capturing my attention at this moment.
Sector Analysis
Precious Metals
The factors that have driven the surge in precious metals are still prevalent, including high levels of debt, a weakening dollar, and ongoing geopolitical concerns. I find myself even more optimistic about silver and believe it has more room for growth. Gold could potentially reach prices around $4,700 in the near future.
Cryptocurrencies
Similar concerns regarding debt and the depreciation of the dollar are expected to support the cryptocurrency market. Although this has been a period of painful retracement, much of the speculation has rather cleared out. With support levels holding steady, cryptocurrencies seem poised for a rebound.
Financial Sector
There are whispers that reduced regulations might spur mergers and acquisitions, benefiting investment banks. With a potential decline in interest rates and increased lending activities, the financial sector is becoming increasingly appealing. However, it's important to move cautiously as the industry undergoes generational shifts towards more digital forms of investing.
Technology Trends
Interestingly, the technology sector is surprisingly flat at present. Our quantitative models have exited positions in several high-profile stocks. While I am bullish on the sector and AI in the long run, I believe that right now is a natural pause. One company catching my eye is IBM, particularly due to its work in quantum computing. I anticipate we might see it reach somewhere around the $400 mark next year, especially as it is currently trading comfortably in the $310 range.
