TPT Ranks in the Top 3 UK Pension Funds Over 10 Years

TPT Ranks in the Top 3 UK Pension Funds Over 10 Years

If you have ever been automatically enrolled into a workplace pension and assumed all default funds are roughly the same, a newly published dataset is about to change your thinking.

Independent performance data compiled by Corporate Adviser using CAPAdata has produced a full 10-year track record for DC (Defined Contribution) multi-employer workplace pension defaults in the UK. The numbers reveal a performance gap so wide it should be required reading for anyone with a pension pot they have not looked at recently.

The 10-Year Numbers That Should Be on Every Saver's Radar

Over the decade to December 2025, the best-performing DC default fund returned 232%. The worst returned 88%. Both figures assume a standard 0.5% annual charge and relate to savers in the growth phase, 30 years from state pension age.

That 144-percentage-point spread is not a rounding error. It is the difference between your retirement pot roughly doubling and nearly tripling in value over the same period.

TPT Retirement Solutions ranked third in that performance table. Its TDF default delivered a cumulative return of 182.73% over the decade - well above the CAPA average of 139.37% across all providers analysed.

Why Governance and Strategy Separate the Leaders From the Pack

TPT's DC Director, Philip Smith, offered a direct response to the data:

"For a long time, scale and low cost have carried a built-in assumption of safety. Big feels credible. Cheap feels efficient. Both are easy to defend. But member outcomes are what matter, and outcomes like these are a reminder that size and price do not, on their own, define value."

For investors and savers who evaluate funds the same way they evaluate any other asset, this is a familiar argument repackaged for the pensions world. Price is not performance. Scale is not quality. What matters is execution: the consistency of investment strategy, the rigour of governance, and the ability to compound returns over the long run.

Some of the most recognisable names in UK pensions delivered below-average returns over this same period. In one case, a major provider's largest default by active membership returned less than 90% over 10 years - barely ahead of the worst performer in the dataset.

The Australia Comparison: A Cautionary Note on Chasing Scale

Research from the Conexus Institute - one of the most closely watched independent research bodies on retirement income policy - argues that both large and small funds can succeed when they are well-designed, and warns explicitly against pursuing size for its own sake.

Australia's own experience includes large funds that have performed strongly alongside consolidation moves that diluted governance quality and drifted away from member-first decision-making. The lesson is not that scale is bad. It is that scale does not automatically transfer the qualities that made a well-run smaller fund perform.

For UK savers watching how the policy debate unfolds, the Australian parallel is worth keeping in mind: the right question is not how big the scheme is, but how well it is run and what it is actually delivering.

What This Means If You Are Reviewing Your Own Pension

Most people in workplace DC schemes are in default funds. They were enrolled automatically, the contributions go in, and the whole thing runs quietly in the background while other financial decisions take priority.

The new 10-year CAPAdata figures are a practical prompt to do three things:

Check which default fund you are actually in. Your employer may have changed providers, or you may have been moved to a newer default. The performance chain-linking methodology used in this dataset tracks outcomes for the majority of active savers, but your specific position is worth verifying.

Look past the headline fee figure. A 0.5% annual charge on a fund returning 6.5% per year compounded over 30 years produces a very different outcome than 0.5% on a fund returning 12.7% per year. Cost matters, but net returns matter more.

Understand that not all auto-enrolment defaults are equal. The 144-point performance gap in this dataset is a clear signal that fund selection and governance quality vary significantly across the market. Default does not mean average.

The Broader Investment Lesson

The DC default fund performance data reinforces something every experienced investor already knows: consistent, risk-adjusted returns over the long term are harder to fake than short-term performance. A fund that has compounded above the market average for a decade, across multiple market cycles, is not doing so by accident.

TPT's result - third in the table, well above the CAPA average - is a data point that sits alongside the governance and investment discipline Philip Smith describes. For a market where most savers have no direct say in which fund manages their retirement money, independent long-term performance data is one of the few objective signals available.

The UK's Value for Money framework, which is set to require providers to publish standardised past performance data, will make these comparisons more accessible and more systematic. If that data becomes public, the conversation about which providers are genuinely delivering for savers will get considerably easier to have.
