Tax Changes in 2026: Impacts on American Households Revealed

Tax Changes in 2026: Impacts on American Households Revealed

Understanding Upcoming Tax Changes for 2026

A new national survey conducted by TaxSlayer through Talker Research highlights a crucial concern among Americans regarding significant tax changes anticipated to take effect in 2026. While many individuals are aware of the upcoming modifications, a considerable number remain unsure about the specific implications for their personal finances.

Awareness and Research on Tax Changes

The survey revealed that 84% of respondents are attentive to updates in tax legislation. However, only 55% of those individuals actively engage in researching these changes, which raises a concern about understanding their impact. Notably, 41% of participants mentioned that they do minimal or no research regarding upcoming tax modifications.

Perception of Personal Impact

Despite the lack of detailed knowledge, an impressive 67% of Americans believe that the new tax laws will personally affect them. Among these participants, one in five anticipates a significant impact on their financial situation. Respondents reported a recognition of specific changes, such as adjustments in deductions for tips and overtime, an increased Child Tax Credit, and the discontinuation of various energy-efficiency and EV credits.

Confidence in Tax Knowledge

Confidence in tax knowledge varies across demographics. The survey indicates that 59% of participants feel they possess a rudimentary understanding of how income taxes work. However, only 16% of women and 25% of men express high confidence in their tax-related knowledge. Interestingly, Generation Z respondents exhibited a stronger sense of understanding, with 31% indicating they grasp the complexities of taxes "very well."

Accessible Guidance on Tax Matters

Seth Babb, the Head of Consumer Products at TaxSlayer, emphasized the disconnect between being aware of tax law changes and fully understanding their implications. He stated, "The gap between knowing that tax laws are changing and comprehending their effects is evident. Therefore, providing accessible and reliable guidance is crucial. We aim to empower taxpayers with resources to help them navigate their financial situations, especially with the new changes brought by the OBBB. This sense of confidence is vital as individuals consider their refunds and financial planning for the year ahead."

Expectations Regarding Tax Returns

Interestingly, most taxpayers surveyed do not expect notable differences in their tax liabilities or refunds compared to the previous year, even though tax laws are changing. Over half of the respondents (52%) believe that their tax bills and refund amounts will remain approximately unchanged. Participants anticipate an average refund of around $1,662, which is slightly below the expectations set for the previous year.

Plans for Tax Refund Utilization

When asked about their plans for utilizing their tax refunds, a significant 57% of participants indicated that they would allocate their refunds towards essential expenses. These include groceries, rent, utilities, credit card debt, savings, and home repairs. Conversely, only 8% plan to use their refunds on non-essential luxury items.

Research Methodology

This study, a product of Talker Research, involved an online survey conducted with 2,000 U.S. taxpayers possessing internet access between specific dates. The aim was to glean insights regarding the tax-related sentiments of a wide-ranging population, reflecting current trends and expectations as the tax landscape prepares for adjustment.
