Sony Bets on Digital as the Gaming Industry Splits

Sony Bets on Digital as the Gaming Industry Splits

Sony Interactive Entertainment just started the countdown to the end of physical gaming, saying that PlayStation is going all in on the digital format. In a blog entry dated July 1, 2026, the company confirmed it would end manufacturing physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting January 2028, citing a clear shift in customers’ preferences toward digital downloads.

The announcement triggered immediate backlash, drawing criticism from indie developers, specialist publishers, and brick-and-mortar retailers. Notably, the biggest names in the industry, including several heatmap giants, stayed unusually quiet.

Sony's pivot did not come from nowhere. The announcement came shortly after Rockstar Games launched disc-less pre-orders for GTA VI, reinforcing the view that the broader industry has been moving toward digital-only distribution for some time.

For Sony, the economics are straightforward. According to reports, physical sales currently account for just 3% of the company's gaming revenue. With digital formats offering higher margins, simpler update pipelines, and lower manufacturing overhead, the financial logic of abandoning discs is hard to dispute, at least from a corporate standpoint.

However, not everybody is eager to go along quietly. Aeternum Game Studios emerged as one of the most vocal critics, issuing an official statement reaffirming what the studio calls its "unwavering commitment to physical editions."

The Spanish developer said it plans to speed up physical releases for multiple games, including Aeterna Noctis Ultimate, Aeterna Lucis, Summum Aeterna, and Eden Genesis, ahead of the 2028 deadline. The studio described the change as a way to protect collectors, culture, and consumer choice.

Physical-focused publisher iam8bit also joined the criticism, saying it was "profoundly disappointed" by Sony's announcement while emphasizing that physical media remains essential for ownership, preservation, and player autonomy.

A few indie developers went even further, saying this decision had reduced their interest in building for PlayStation. They cited higher barriers for collectors and concerns about long-term accessibility.

For their part, investors have reacted positively to the move. The stock price has even risen since the announcement.

Ownership, Preservation, and a Troubling Precedent

The frustration goes beyond sentiment. Physical media provides a stronger sense of ownership that digital licenses can’t always match. A physical copy generally remains accessible regardless of server shutdowns, platform delistings, or licensing disputes.

The issue becomes even more concerning in light of Sony's recent history. The company removed hundreds of previously purchased films from users' libraries, raising broader questions about what a fully digital future could mean for games and gamers.

Retailers also have reason to worry. Boxed products bring people into stores and remain an important revenue stream that digital codes just can’t replace. For smaller studios, physical releases do more than generate sales — they serve as marketing tools, attract buyers of premium limited editions, and support the secondary market, helping strengthen both community engagement and brand loyalty.

Major AAA publishers and Sony's first-party studios have largely aligned with the digital direction, or stayed silent. The resistance is concentrated among smaller, more culturally invested players, and notably, among consumers themselves, with preservationists and even politicians reportedly weighing in on the cultural implications of an all-digital future.

Sony's bet is clear: digital dominance is both inevitable and profitable. The shift also comes as the gaming industry faces broader cost pressures, including rising component prices fueled by the AI boom. Microsoft, one of the stock screener leaders, recently announced plans to cut 4,800 jobs — many of them in its Xbox division — highlighting a broader drive to improve profitability across the sector in response to an ongoing structural crisis.

Whether the coalition of indie studios, specialist publishers, retailers, and collectors can carve out a durable physical niche will become apparent over the next 18 months. For studios like Aeternum, the countdown to 2028 has already begun.
