Smile Train Unveils Major Cleft Care Center in Africa

Transforming the Future of Cleft Care

In a monumental step towards enhancing cleft care in Africa, Smile Train, a global leader in cleft-focused initiatives, has inaugurated a groundbreaking facility at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). This new Cleft Leadership Center is set to be the continent's largest, significantly enabling access to essential services for children born with cleft conditions.

A Collaborative Effort for Change

The establishment of this center results from a synergistic partnership between Smile Train, Ghana's Ministry of Health, the Ghana Cleft Foundation, and KATH. Through this coalition, they aim to unlock new doors for countless families, ensuring they receive the urgent cleft care they deserve.

Increased Capacity and Comprehensive Services

The new facility, spanning nearly 30,000 square feet, will increase the treatment capacity at KATH by more than five-fold, accommodating the needs of around 850 children compared to the previous capacity of approximately 150. Moreover, the center will enhance surgical training capabilities, allowing for the training of up to 18 surgeons annually, thus addressing an urgent need for skilled professionals in cleft care.

Immediate Impact on Child Health

"The influence of this center will resonate throughout the community, impacting the health and futures of countless children," said Susannah Schaefer, President and CEO of Smile Train. She further emphasized the importance of fostering a pipeline of trained experts who can provide high-quality care for generations to come. This vision is not merely about immediate treatment but about creating a sustainable healthcare ecosystem.

Breaking Barriers to Access

Many families currently face formidable challenges in reaching timely and effective cleft care. The Cleft Leadership Center aims to be a beacon of hope, specializing in comprehensive treatments that include surgery, dental services, and speech therapy, thus ensuring a holistic approach to care.

Setting a New Benchmark in Surgical Capacity

Prof. Peter Donkor, President of the Ghana Cleft Foundation, indicated that this center represents a significant step forward for surgical capacity in Africa, exemplifying the success of partnership-driven approaches. He stated, "This facility embodies our commitment to providing every child with cleft conditions a fair chance at a fulfilled and healthy life."

A Vision for Future Care Providers

Prior to the center's launch, KATH could only offer about 100 surgeries per year. With the center's enhanced capacity, it is forecasted to support a total of 500 surgical patients and 350 individuals requiring comprehensive care, including nutritional education and psychosocial support.

Supporting Local Health Systems

Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, Acting CEO of KATH, stated, "This collaboration not only amplifies access but also fosters a culture of training future cleft care providers, vital for ongoing health improvement in the region." Through this initiative, Smile Train's commitment to enhancing local health infrastructures becomes increasingly evident.

A Bright Future for Children and Families

The National Cleft Care Center – A Smile Train Cleft Leadership Center stands as a testament to the efficacy of locally led, high-quality cleft care initiatives. This new facility is designed to serve thousands of children and families, offering the promise of lasting change in their lives.

About Smile Train: Smile Train empowers local medical professionals with training, funding, and resources to provide free cleft surgery and comprehensive care to children globally. They emphasize a sustainable health model that produces both immediate and long-term positive outcomes for children's health and well-being.
