Significant Investment in Transitioning to Eco-Friendly Buses

Significant Investment in Transitioning to Eco-Friendly Buses

A Green Future for School Transportation

Students in 35 school districts will soon enjoy cleaner air as a result of a major initiative aimed at enhancing environmental health. The South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) recently approved an impressive amount of up to $78.2 million for a project focused on replacing 286 old, high-polluting school buses with state-of-the-art zero-emission models. This project also includes the installation of essential charging infrastructure throughout the region, which will support the transition to eco-friendly transportation.

Enhancing Air Quality Across Districts

This ambitious project is projected to significantly improve air quality across the 35 public school districts that will participate in this initiative. Among the new zero-emission buses included in this rollout:

Distribution of New Buses

These buses will be allocated as follows:

  • 124 buses in Los Angeles County
  • 50 buses in Orange County
  • 60 buses in Riverside County
  • 52 buses in San Bernardino County

Impact on the Environment

The implementation of these new buses is expected to reduce harmful emissions by approximately 46.3 tons of smog-forming nitrogen oxides and 3.5 tons of particulate matter annually. This transition is crucial for bolstering air quality, particularly for students who spend time on these buses every day.

Focusing on Overburdened Communities

More than 87 percent of the new buses will operate in overburdened communities. This focus ensures that those areas with the highest need for cleaner air are prioritized, allowing students and residents to experience a significant improvement in air quality.

Funding the Transition

Funding for this transformative project originates from a variety of clean air programs, including the Carl Moyer Program, CARE4Kids Program, and other local and state funding sources. This collaboration unites state and local efforts to facilitate the shift to zero-emission transportation, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability.

Long-Term Commitment to Cleaner Transportation

Since launching the Lower-Emission School Bus Program in 2001, the South Coast AQMD has made significant strides in funding as much as $372 million to assist school districts in replacing or retrofitting diesel school buses. To date, this program has successfully replaced over 1,900 diesel buses with alternative fuel or zero-emission models and retrofitted more than 3,400 buses with particulate matter traps, ensuring safe and clean transport for students across the region.

Regulatory Oversight and Community Engagement

South Coast AQMD is dedicated to enhancing air quality across a broad area, including multiple counties and regions. They encourage the public to stay informed about air quality alerts, news, and events by visiting their website or engaging through various social media platforms. By maintaining an open line of communication, South Coast AQMD fosters greater community involvement and awareness.
