Shifting Consumer Trends: Spending and Saving Insights from WSFS

Understanding Consumer Behavior in a Changing Economy

Recent insights from a survey conducted by WSFS Bank reveal intriguing patterns in the spending and saving habits of regional consumers during challenging economic times. The survey shows that 38% of residents are spending more compared to the previous year, while only 28% report saving more. This survey reflects the adaptations consumers are making in navigating financial pressures.

The Impact of Inflation on Spending Habits

Economic pressures such as rising costs and inflation continue to be significant factors influencing consumer spending. A striking 69% of those who increased their spending attributed it to these economic challenges. Despite the overall instability of the economy, many consumers are modifying their financial habits to enhance their financial wellbeing.

Cost of Living Pressures

The survey, targeting 1,000 respondents aged 18 to 55 within the region, reveals that while spending is diversified, essentials hold priority. More than half of consumers are spending more on critical items like groceries (65%), utilities (55%), and transportation (53%). When compared to 2023, spending on groceries and housing has notably increased, 65% versus 60% and 50% versus 43%, respectively.

Consumer Strategies for Financial Resilience

Shari Kruzinski, the Chief Consumer Banking Officer at WSFS Bank, emphasizes the necessity for consumers to remain vigilant in their spending habits. "While inflation has shown signs of levelling off, it’s critical for consumers to maintain a focus on budgeting and look for ways to reduce expenses. This might include shopping at discount stores or leveraging bulk buying when possible," she explains.

Spending Adjustments and Preferences

In this year’s survey, two in five consumers indicated they are spending more, while a similar number reported a decrease in their spending habits. Those who adjusted their spending often reduced discretionary expenses, particularly in dining out (40%), entertainment (35%), and travel (34%).

Payment Methods Adaptation

The shift in spending patterns is accompanied by changes in payment methods. Approximately 44% of individuals are relying more heavily on their debit cards, while 36% prefer using cash. Interestingly, the rising trend of buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) payment systems is evident, with 35% of consumers engaging with this service more frequently.

Navigating Savings in a Tight Economy

Results indicate that nearly half of respondents reported a decline in their overall savings, dropping from 50% in 2023 to 46% this year. Yet, a commendable 28% report increased savings, a notable rise from 21% in the previous year. The leading motivation for savings among consumers remains financial stability, which has increased from 36% in 2023 to 42% this year.

Awareness of Financial Products

Despite these savings objectives, there seems to be a significant gap in knowledge regarding high-yield savings accounts and CDs, with substantial numbers of respondents unaware or unfamiliar with these options. Understanding and utilizing these financial products can be pivotal in achieving their savings goals.

WSFS Bank's Commitment to Financial Education

Kruzinski emphasizes the value of setting financial goals as an essential component in managing personal finances. She encourages individuals to explore higher interest rates available through money market accounts and CDs, which provide better returns compared to standard savings accounts. Seeking guidance from local bankers can enhance understanding and assist in achieving specialized financial objectives.
