Sewa International's Green Summit: Paving the Way for Sustainability

Sewa International's Commitment to a Greener Future

Sewa International recently hosted its impactful virtual Green Summit: Small Steps, Big Impact, gathering over 150 participants to discuss critical actions for a sustainable future. The summit showcased a panel of esteemed guests from various environmental sectors, focusing on practical steps we can take to improve our planet's health.

Panel Insights on Clean Energy and Ocean Conservation

The opening panel of the event revolved around the theme of "Clean Energy and Ocean Health." Moderated by Rakhi Israni, Vice President of Government Relations at Sewa International, the discussion underscored the symbiotic relationship between humanity and the environment. Among the panelists were Laura Bartsch, a Strategic Advisor at the Carbon League, and Stewart Sarkozy-Banoczy, Managing Director and CEO of the World Ocean Council, both sharing visions for clean energy innovation and ocean conservation.

Achieving Clean Energy Goals

During the summit, Laura Bartsch emphasized that achieving 100% clean energy is practical today, despite the existing policy hurdles. She highlighted the innovative offshore wind energy projects in Rhode Island and stressed the importance of local initiatives, such as congestion pricing in urban centers. These initiatives not only reduce traffic congestion but also pave the way for a transition to cleaner transportation options, funded by the newfound revenue. Bartsch encouraged small changes like adding bike lanes, which can significantly shift community behaviors towards sustainability.

Restoring Ocean Ecosystems

Sarkozy-Banoczy articulated the essential role that oceans play in carbon absorption and climate stability. He argued that marine industries, such as shipping and fishing, need to go beyond mere sustainability practices and actively contribute to restoring marine ecosystems. He warned against the dangers of corporate green-washing and blue-washing, urging consumers to critically evaluate environmental claims to ensure that only genuine efforts for systemic change are recognized.

Youth Engagement in Environmental Action

Bringing fresh perspectives, young leaders Ira Gramopadhye and Lipika Devara shared actionable insights for reducing household waste through practical composting techniques. Devara led discussions about sustainability challenges, with contributions from Jennifer Cole and Rashmi Prabhu, focusing on improving waste management and addressing the hazards of fast fashion. Additionally, Rohit Deshpande highlighted the positive impact of community volunteerism through Sewa’s SERVE program.

Empowering Change Through Collective Action

The culmination of the summit was marked by a compelling call to action. Panelists encouraged attendees to adopt small, consistent changes, such as avoiding bottled water, collectively leading to significant environmental improvements. They stressed the importance of empowering youth to engage actively in policymaking and raise awareness for sustainable practices.
