Saia's Third Quarter Financial Report: Growth and Challenges

Saia's Impressive Third Quarter Results

Saia, Inc. (Nasdaq: SAIA), a prominent provider in the transportation sector, recently unveiled its financial results for the third quarter of 2024. The results showcased the company’s resilience amidst evolving market conditions, with a total revenue of $842.1 million, marking an 8.6% increase compared to the previous year's quarter. However, despite this revenue growth, the diluted earnings per share saw a slight decline, falling to $3.46 compared to $3.67 in the same quarter of 2023.

Key Financial Highlights

Several notable metrics emerged from Saia's third quarter performance:

  • Operating income came in at $125.2 million, reflecting a decrease of 2.5%
  • The operating ratio showed a slight rise to 85.1%, compared to 83.4% last year
  • LTL (less-than-truckload) shipments per workday rose by 8.5%
  • LTL tonnage per workday increased by 7.7%
  • LTL revenue per hundredweight, excluding fuel surcharge, saw a modest increase of 1.7%
  • LTL revenue per shipment grew by 0.9%, excluding the fuel surcharge revenue

Operational Expansion and Strategic Developments

Fritz Holzgrefe, President and CEO, expressed satisfaction regarding the company’s ongoing terminal expansion strategy, which included the opening of 11 new terminals and relocating one during this quarter. Primarily located in the Great Plains states, these new terminals enable Saia to enhance its direct service across the contiguous 48 states. Holzgrefe emphasized the strategic importance of this expansion, stating, "These terminal openings significantly bolster our value proposition by allowing us to provide services directly in areas traditionally reliant on partner carriers. Our commitment remains steadfast—investing in improving the customer experience is paramount."

Looking Ahead

In his statement, Executive Vice President and CFO Matt Batteh highlighted the challenging freight backdrop that persisted throughout the quarter. Despite facing some uncertainties in the forward outlook, Batteh reassured stakeholders of the company’s long-term growth strategy. Exciting updates included the recent opening of a new terminal in Akron, Ohio, and plans for up to three additional terminal openings within the fourth quarter, bringing the total for the year to 21.

Financial Position and Capital Expenditures

As of the end of the third quarter of 2024, Saia reported $14.4 million in cash, with total debt standing at $191.0 million. This contrasts sharply with the previous year, where cash on hand amounted to $249.3 million, and the total debt was only $18.9 million. During the first nine months of 2024, Saia invested approximately $873.2 million in capital expenditures, a significant increase compared to $338.4 million in the same period of 2023. This investment included $235.7 million as a part of the Yellow Corporation auction process.

Interested parties are encouraged to dial in five to ten minutes early for what promises to be an insightful discussion regarding the company’s current standing and strategic direction.
