RTX Corporation Updates 2024 Predictions Following Q3 Report

RTX Corporation Surprises with Strong Q3 Performance

RTX Corporation (NYSE: RTX) has seen its stock rise significantly, thanks to impressive third-quarter fiscal reports that have exceeded market expectations.

Financial Highlights for Q3

In a positive turn of events, RTX reported a remarkable 6% year-over-year increase in adjusted net sales, amounting to $20.089 billion. This figure surpassed analysts' expectations, which had estimated sales at $19.848 billion. The adjusted earnings per share (EPS) also showed strong growth, increasing by 16% to reach $1.45, outpacing the consensus of $1.34.

Business Segment Performances

Looking closely at the various segments, Collins Aerospace reported sales of $7.075 billion, reflecting a 7% increase year-over-year. This growth was primarily fueled by a significant 14% rise in defense-related sales and a 9% growth in the commercial aftermarket sector. However, this was dampened slightly by an 8% decrease in commercial original equipment (OE) sales. The adjusted operating margin saw a slight contraction of 10 basis points from the previous year, settling at 15.5%.

Pratt & Whitney’s Strong Showing

In a standout performance, Pratt & Whitney's sales reached $7.239 billion, marking a notable increase of 14% annually. The boost was largely due to a 20% uptick in military sales, alongside a 13% rise in commercial aftermarket sales. Commercial OE sales also contributed positively with a 9% increase, leading to an adjusted operating margin of 8.2%, which was up by 170 basis points year over year.

Raytheon Sales Insights

Raytheon's sales experienced a slight decline of 1% year-over-year, totaling $6.386 billion, largely attributed to the divestiture of its Cybersecurity division. However, if we exclude this factor, sales were up 5%. The adjusted operating margin for Raytheon improved to 10.4%, an increase of 160 basis points.

Robust Forward-Looking Statements

RTX concluded the quarter with a substantial backlog of $221 billion, with $131 billion attributed to commercial aerospace and $90 billion for defense contracts. The company’s operating cash flow for the third quarter was reported at $2.523 billion, down from $3.316 billion the previous year, but free cash flow stood impressively at $1.971 billion.

Returning Value to Shareholders

This quarter, RTX returned $1.1 billion to its shareholders, raising the total capital returned since the merger to over $32 billion. Additionally, the company achieved $90 million in incremental gross cost synergies, successfully hitting its $2 billion target post-merger.

CEO Comments on Performance

RTX President and CEO Chris Calio highlighted the confidence in the company’s trajectory, stating, “RTX delivered another strong quarter of organic sales growth, adjusted segment margin expansion, and free cash flow. Demand across our portfolio, particularly within commercial aftermarket and defense, remains robust, allowing us to raise our full-year outlook for adjusted sales and adjusted EPS.”

Updated 2024 Financial Outlook

Looking ahead, RTX has revised its guidance for 2024, predicting adjusted sales in the range of $79.25 billion to $79.75 billion, up from the previous estimate of $78.75 billion to $79.5 billion, and exceeding the consensus of $78.501 billion. Additionally, the adjusted EPS outlook has been increased to between $5.50 and $5.58 compared to the prior range of $5.35 to $5.45, surpassing the consensus of $5.47.

Future Expectations and Innovations

RTX continues to reaffirm its free cash flow outlook at around $4.7 billion for the year. Furthermore, Collins Aerospace announced the successful rollout of its upgraded Venue™ cabin management system, which now features smart monitors and an enhanced user interface. This innovative system enhances the in-flight experience with over 1,700 installations offering 4K resolution and improved cabin controls.

As of the recent market check, RTX shares reflected a 1.59% increase, trading at $127.90.
