Registration Now Open for MITRE's 2026 eCTF Competition

Exciting Launch of the 2026 MITRE Embedded Capture the Flag Competition

Registration has officially commenced for the highly anticipated MITRE 2026 Embedded Capture the Flag (eCTF) Competition, an initiative aimed at high school and college students eager to develop valuable cybersecurity skills. This program provides students with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in real-world cybersecurity challenges, fostering the technical workforce of tomorrow.

Registration Details and Competition Timeline

The registration period remains open until January 31, 2026. The competition kicks off on January 14 and continues until April 15, concluding with a celebratory award ceremony on April 24, 2026. This extensive timeframe allows participants to engage deeply with the materials and challenges presented, enhancing their learning experience.

Hands-On Cybersecurity Training for Participants

In its 11th year, the MITRE eCTF provides participants with immersive, hands-on experience in securing embedded systems—an essential aspect of modern technology infrastructure. Students from diverse educational backgrounds come together during this competition, aimed at honing both offensive and defensive cybersecurity skills necessary for successful careers in the field.

Expert Insights from MITRE's Leadership

According to Doug Robbins, vice president of engineering and prototyping at MITRE, the program emphasizes authentic learning experiences through real-world scenarios. He highlights that "MITRE's commitment to practical training prepares participants to protect critical infrastructure by offering access to advanced hardware platforms, secure environments, and unparalleled mentorship. This approach is fundamental to building a solid foundation for future cybersecurity experts.”

Theme for the 2026 Competition: Securing Chip Foundries

This year, teams will tackle the theme of developing and implementing secure storage solutions for chip foundries. Participants will work on building systems that regulate user access based on their roles while ensuring that sensitive chip designs are safeguarded against unauthorized access. This scenario reflects the intricate security challenges industry and government sectors frequently face.

Innovative Hardware Platforms for Competition Teams

The 2026 eCTF makes available a fresh hardware platform for competitors—the Texas Instruments MSPM0L2228. This platform boasts a Cortex-M0+ ARM processor and includes 256 kB of flash and 32 kB of static random-access memory (SRAM), along with various peripherals. Teams will employ a custom board and may opt to purchase additional LaunchPads to facilitate development.

Getting Involved and Supporting the eCTF

For more information regarding registration and additional competition details, interested individuals can visit https://ectf.mitre.org. Inquiries can be directed to ectf@mitre.org. Organizations interested in enhancing the eCTF experience may explore sponsorship opportunities available at https://ectf.mitre.org/sponsor. MITRE encourages educational institutions to consider offering course credit to students as a means of reinforcing the competition's role in career readiness.

A Mission-Driven Learning Experience

The MITRE eCTF stands out due to its unique focus on embedded systems security—a vital area often overlooked by traditional online capture-the-flag competitions. The event provides a balanced focus on both offensive and defensive skills over a rigorous 12-week period. This hands-on, hardware-centric experience is designed to cultivate essential skills and promote teamwork among students from various academic disciplines.

Operating as a not-for-profit organization, MITRE collaborates with federally funded R&D centers to create impactful solutions addressing critical national issues. The commitment to youth through the eCTF is a testament to MITRE's dedication to innovation and measurable societal contributions, ultimately preparing the next generation to secure the increasingly complex systems that underlie modern life.

Past Participation and Future Aspirations

In a previous iteration held in 2025, more than 1,200 students participated in the eCTF, forming 139 teams that represented 123 educational institutions across 17 different countries. This impressive turnout underscores the competition's growing appeal and the vital need for cybersecurity education.

About MITRE

MITRE’s mission-oriented teams are resolutely focused on delivering innovative solutions to some of the most pressing issues facing our nation. As a dedicated non-profit R&D entity, the organization leverages its collective expertise and resources to boost national well-being, economic development, and security.
