Beijing International Book Fair Achieves New Milestone

Trends at the recent Beijing International Book Fair highlighted an impressive increase in web novels and short fiction, alongside a surge in international book agreements.

The 31st Beijing International Book Fair recently concluded after five robust days packed with rights trading, enlightening conferences, themed exhibitions, and valuable networking opportunities.

2025 marked a record-breaking year for international participation at BIBF, witnessing a remarkable increase in exhibitors, representing a variety of countries, alongside the hosting of numerous professional forums.

BIBF 2025 in Key Numbers

During this year’s fair, a staggering number of 1,700 exhibitors from 80 countries and regions came together—a 13% increase compared to the previous year. Notable was the first-time participation from nations like Bangladesh, Chile, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Jamaica, Kenya, and Oman, broadening the fair's cultural reach.

With nearly 300,000 enthusiastic attendees, the fair facilitated over 2,826 professional rights trading sessions, showcasing more than 220,000 unique titles across the exhibition halls.

An impressive volume of 2,826 copyright agreements and memorandums of understanding were executed, which included 1,955 export, 753 import, and 118 co-publishing contracts—a clear indicator of the fair's vibrant business atmosphere.

Insights from the Event's Leadership

Madame Lin Liying, the President of the China National Publications Import & Export Corporation (CNPIEC) and organizer of BIBF, expressed her reflections on the fair's significance. "The Beijing International Book Fair served as an excellent platform for narratives showcasing China’s stories while strengthening global cultural exchange. Each aspect of the fair was crafted to cultivate a hub for publishing collaboration, promote cross-cultural dialogues, and bolster international promotion of Chinese literature. The dialogues initiated here are sure to resonate beyond the confines of the event itself, marking a highlight of my year," she noted.

Business Highlights: Major Deals and Significant Launches

During the PubTech Conference, Cheng Yan from Douyin Group presented impressive statistics surrounding the growth of online literature in the country. China's online literary market has grown remarkably, skyrocketing from RMB 20.48 billion in 2019 to RMB 43.06 billion in 2024—a 6.8% year-over-year increase. The demand for adaptations into short-form dramas significantly surged, with new intellectual properties reaching 72,674 by the close of 2023.

Noteworthy Announcements

Significant business deals and collaborations were framed during the fair. The Encyclopedia of China Publishing House along with DK (UK) unveiled the title 'Imperial China', part of the distinguished 'Great Civilizations of the World' series. Additionally, Phoenix Publishing and Media Inc. inked a memorandum of understanding for co-publishing with Peter Lang Group AG, underpinning the fair's dedication to fostering collaborative ventures.

New Titles Introduced

The Chinese edition of 'Lula: Biografia' was launched by Yilin Press during BIBF, while The Contemporary World Press, in collaboration with author Melissa Fleming, introduced the narrative 'A Hope More Powerful than the Sea', a powerful true story sharing profound insights.

Cultural Showcase and Author Participation

One of China's top authors and the BIBF Reading Ambassador, Liu Zhenyun, highlighted the fair alongside a stellar group of international authors. This distinguished roster included UN official and author Melissa Fleming, renowned UK illustrator Neil Packer, Malaysian novelist Lee Zishu, and Japanese author Shinobu Yoshii, proving the fair's draw for literary talents.
