Rabbit Advocacy Group Calls for an End to Petco's Rabbit Sales

Rabbit Advocacy Group Urges Petco to Stop Selling Rabbits

Animal Advocates Call for Immediate Halt to Rabbit Sales at Petco

Rabbit.org has raised significant concerns about Petco's recent decision to start selling rabbits again in its southern U.S. stores. This move goes against commitments made by Petco in 1994 and 2008 to stop selling these animals in favor of more ethical practices.

Sales of pets often lead to impulsive decisions from well-meaning customers who may not fully grasp the level of commitment required to care for a rabbit properly. Such hasty purchases can contribute to a troubling phenomenon known as "summer dump season," during which many rabbits are abandoned outdoors, facing dire consequences such as becoming roadkill or being preyed upon by local wildlife.

"Petco's choice to resume rabbit sales is disappointing and shows a clear disregard for their previous promises regarding animal welfare," said Paige K. Parsons, President of Rabbit.org.

Other leaders in animal advocacy, including Beth Woolbright, Executive Director of the House Rabbit Society, shared similar concerns, stating, "This reversal will negatively impact rabbit rescue efforts nationwide, especially with the growing trend of designer rabbits enticing many unprepared buyers."

According to Dana Krempels, PhD, an evolutionary biologist, the promotion of boutique, purebred rabbits can lead to various health issues. The breeding processes used to create these specific breeds often involve inbreeding, which can harm the rabbits' overall health and make them more susceptible to a range of medical conditions. Consequently, the care costs for these animals can escalate quickly, imposing financial burdens on their owners.

Petco has a history of making commitments regarding rabbit sales. In 1994, after pressure from advocates, they decided to stop selling rabbits. However, they resumed sales in 2000 and once again promised to halt sales in 2008 after partnering with the House Rabbit Society to promote in-store adoptions.

In recent years, the number of surrendered rabbits has been on the rise. Mary Cotter, former President of the House Rabbit Society, noted that rabbits are among the most frequently surrendered companion animals in the United States.

Marinell Harriman, the founder of the House Rabbit Society, highlighted the potential for positive change, stating, "Petco's 2008 collaboration with local rabbit rescues gave us hope for improved animal welfare practices. We believed this would signal an end to the commercial sale of rabbits in their stores."

Jeanette Lyerly, co-founder of Triangle Rabbits, expressed her disappointment regarding Petco's current decision to sell rabbits in many stores, including local ones. As a dedicated rescue organization, Lyerly emphasized their commitment to promoting the adoption of homeless rabbits rather than supporting sales in stores. The heartbreaking reality is that in 2024 alone, their rescue received over 175 requests to take in rabbits, underscoring the urgent need for support in rescue efforts.

The Rabbit.org Foundation remains steadfast in its demand for Petco to honor its original commitments and stop rabbit sales altogether. "Anyone who cares about animal welfare should speak out against Petco's exploitative practices," Parsons asserted. "Profiting from rabbits while neglecting their welfare is simply unacceptable."

Beyond advocating for the rights of rabbits, the Rabbit.org Foundation is dedicated to educating the public and promoting humane treatment for these pets.
