Preeclampsia Foundation: Advancing Women's Health Initiatives

Preeclampsia Foundation Awarded for Women's Health Advancement

The Preeclampsia Foundation, a dedicated non-profit organization in the United States, has recently been recognized as one of the initiative awardees for Action for Women's Health. This global initiative launched to provide essential funding to organizations focused on enhancing women's mental and physical well-being.

Preeclampsia and related hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) impact a significant percentage of pregnancies, roughly 5-8%, making them a critical concern for maternal and infant health globally. Awareness of these serious conditions is necessary, as they are among the leading causes of maternal and infant mortality.

Despite women comprising half the world's population, there are notable disparities in health research and funding. Issues surrounding women's health often go underfunded and under-researched. Furthermore, even when solutions exist, the women who need them the most are frequently left without access.

Robyn D'Oria, chair of the board of directors for the Preeclampsia Foundation, expressed her gratitude for this recognition. "This award signifies the strides we have made in the past 25 years towards preventing illness and fatalities among mothers and their infants. It also highlights the crucial need for increased investments in research," she stated. D'Oria emphasized the need for better solutions for women diagnosed with preeclampsia, advocating for innovative research to enhance care for mothers and their babies.

The selection process was highly competitive, with over 4,000 organizations from 119 countries vying for support. The thorough evaluation process led to the identification of 80+ organizations that will benefit from this financial assistance, many of which have previously encountered obstacles in securing substantial funding. The impact of this funding is anticipated to resonate across diverse demographics and life stages, providing vital support for women worldwide.

D'Oria pointed out that this funding is just the beginning of addressing the significant gaps in research and care improvement for women’s health. Research conducted in 2022 by recognized organizations outlines various gaps in understanding and managing preeclampsia. Continuous funding is essential to close these gaps and improve outcomes for mothers and infants.

The Action for Women's Health initiative is backed by Pivotal, a collective founded by Melinda French Gates, and is managed by Lever for Change. This group has a history of promoting innovative solutions to some of the world’s most urgent challenges. More information about the initiative and the various organizations awarded funding can be found through official communications.
