If ever the schizophrenic nature of our national cultural beliefs on abortion was evident, it was in a Florida courtroom this week. John Andrew Welden pleaded guilty to a raft of crimes and could face up to 15 years in prison. His plea was entered in an attempt to escape the possibility of being found guilty of murdering his child and being jailed for life. The sentence is too kind for Welden, who back in February learned he would soon be a father.
His girlfriend, Remy Lee, told Welden in February that she was pregnant and would be having his baby. He tried to persuade her not to go through with the pregnancy, but Lee was elated to be having a child with the man she loved. A few days later he told her that some medical tests revealed she had a bacterial infection and would need to take amoxicillin. He later brought the pills over, but had secretly replaced the amoxicillin with abortion pills. Lee dutifully began taking the medicine that her boyfriend said the Doctor had prescribed to her.
On Easter morning Ms. Lee woke in a pool of blood and was rushed to the hospital where Doctors told her she had lost the child, and to her surprise that the pills she had been taking were not amoxicillin.
Soon after, Welden was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder in his child’s death. And therein lies the disconnect in our national legal system. We believe killing a pre-born child that is “wanted” is murder, but the killing of a pre-born child that is “unwanted” is simply a choice. What would have happened if Welden had wanted the baby, and Lee had been the one to abort the child? Nothing. In fact, abortion is only abortion when the woman carrying the child decides whether or not she wants the child.
It is a sick, convoluted logic. However, I believe it to be proof positive that our culture knows abortion is evil. They hem and haw about when or if it’s ever proper… they say things like – “it’s not right for me, but I can’t force my opinion on others.” (Which, by the way, is utter nonsense. All law is forcing some moral code onto other people… the argument is ridiculous and petty.) Our pro-choice voting friends and neighbors know that abortion is wicked, which is why they build in laws like this that allow punishment to murderers of pre-born babies. What they don’t realize is the hypocrisy of their actions.
How can it be murder to kill a pre-born baby for one person and simply a choice for someone else? It can’t be. Abortion is ALWAYS murder. Every time. No Exceptions.
