City National Bank Collects and Donates Over 41,000 School Supplies for At-Risk Students in Elementary Schools in Five States

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 11, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- City National Bank today announced that with the help of its colleagues the bank collected a record amount of school supplies totaling more than 41,000 items as part of its 4th Annual Back-to-School Supplies Drive held last month. The bank in turn donated these school supplies to 25 elementary schools and a nonprofit group in California, Nevada, New York, Georgia and Tennessee.

As part of the donation presentation to some schools a number of bank colleagues also took part in teaching City National's Dollars + Sense financial literacy program to students at the schools receiving supplies. City National started this program several years ago as an enhancement to its award-winning Reading is The way up ® literacy program. The Dollars + Sense program is for grades K-12 and teaches age appropriate information about banking and finance.

Started by a number of caring colleagues in the Banking and Investment Services area of the bank, the School Supplies Drive now includes more than 3,600 colleagues in five states who donate to this worthy cause. This year's record number of school supplies surpassed last year's donations of 36,000 items, "which continues to demonstrate the genuine concern and caring attitude our colleagues have for the communities we serve," said Jennifer Nickerson, vice president and community relations manager for City National.

"The importance of a child coming to school adequately equipped cannot be overstated," Nickerson added. "With all of the challenges facing students today there are more children than ever before who need our help so they can receive a quality education and a head start to a brighter future."

The school supplies collected and donated this year included backpacks, erasers, highlighters, round-tip scissors, packs of wide ruled paper, colored pencils, folders, notebooks, pencil sharpeners, rulers, boxes of crayons, glue sticks, #2 pencils, three-ring binders, and more. In addition to these supplies, bank colleagues donated countless hours of their time packaging and delivering these supplies to the various schools, along with teaching the Dollars + Sense financial literacy program to hundreds of students.

The elementary schools and nonprofit group receiving supplies are as follows:

California

  • Sunkist Elementary, Anaheim
  • Winnetka Elementary, Canoga Park
  • Meadows Homes Elementary, Concord

"Education is clearly at the heart of City National's community outreach, and with the amount of school supplies collected this year it reaffirms the huge hearts our colleagues have towards helping children and our schools on The Way Up ," Nickerson said. "We look forward to this program getting bigger and better each year through the continued generosity of our colleagues."
