Hermosa Mining Proposal by Arizona Minerals / Wildcat Silver
Arizona Minerals, Inc. (AMI), a subsidiary of Wildcat Silver , has submitted a new proposal for extensive mineral exploration activities in the Patagonia Mountains, 6 miles southeast of Patagonia and 5-10 miles north of the US/Mexico border. These mining activities include conducting drilling activities, digging test pits, pumping hundreds of thousands of gallons of groundwater from the local aquifer , and driving construction equipment cross-country rather than on established roads, an activity that is strictly prohibited on the Coronado National Forest.
This project will likely compromise a critical cross-border wildlife corridor, adversely modify critical habitat for the jaguar and the Mexican spotted owl, and devastate Harshaw Creek, a biologically rich riparian area recently designated as a “municipal watershed” for the town of Patagonia.
The Coronado National Forest (CNF) has released a Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Assessment (EA) and is currently accepting scoping comments on this project. Deadline for comments is September 6, 2013 .
Send your comments in today! Tell the CNF that it must prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) and fully analyze the direct, indirect, and cumulative impacts of this harmful project.
For an overview of proposed activities, talking points outlining potential impacts, and information on how to submit comments, please see Patagonia Area Resource Alliance's website and action page:
