Academy Award Winner Octavia Spencer Shines in "Blues for Willadean" from Hannover House
Aug 20, 2013 (ACCESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- New York, NY (ACCESSWIRE) 8/20/2013 7:30:00 AM - - Oscar-winning Actress Octavia Spencer ("The Help") leads a stellar cast in director Del Shores' acclaimed feature film, "Blues for Willadean," coming to home video on January 21, 2014 by Hannover House (OTC PINK: HHSE). The 2012 production, based on a critically-praised stage play by veteran director Shores, is timed for a post-holiday release window, preceding February's Black History Month. Hannover House will list DVD's at $14.95, and Blu-Ray copies at $19.95 suggested retail. Wal-Mart shoppers can enjoy a free VUDU download with purchases of either the DVD or Blu-Ray copies.
Other notable cast members include actress Dale Dickey ("Iron Man 3", "Super 8" and HBO's "True Blood"), Beth Grant ("No Country for Old Men", "The Artist") and David Steen ("Django Unchained", "Reservoir Dogs"). Octavia Spencer can be currently seen in "Fruitvale Station," the Forest Whitaker production that won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes earlier this year.
The distribution agreement was negotiated between Eric Parkinson on behalf of Hannover House, and Andrew Herwitz of New York's The Film Sales Company.
"We love quality dramas for our release schedule," said Fred Shefte, President of Hannover House. "The successful launch last weekend of 'Lee Daniels' The Butler' evidences the large and growing audience of movie goers wanting more than cookie-cutter super-hero films. 'Blues for Willadean' presents an authentic slice of Americana that most never experience. In the same way that 'Winter's Bone', 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' and this year's 'Mud' opened the window to rural eccentricities, 'Blues for Willadean' presents a gritty and real look at trailer-park living and the plague of domestic abuse. The message is powerful and important," he concluded.
Blues for Willadean explores the hidden emotions, shame, and secrecy of battered women, while also offering hope, healing and truth. A delicate blend of frightened humor and pain, it delves right into the heart of abuse from all sides - the abuser, the abused, and the powerless bystander. It is the story of Willadean Winkler, the wife of a blue collar truck driver, as she attempts to escape the abusive prison he has built for her. With the help of her only friend, LaSonia, who lives in the trailer next door and the musical encouragement of the specter of a mystical Blues Singer, Willadean fights to break the cycle of the sick dance between the abuser and the abused.
