Youku Tudou Management Discusses Q2 2013 Results - Earnings Call Transcript

Cheung Koo Wing - Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Yes. Philip, that's a great question. We take a balanced approach for investing in content. We continue to have a reasonable share of hot content, whereas our low-cost original content, library content and user-generated
content are generating higher and higher portion of traffic over the last few quarters. In other words, we're relying less and less on hot content to generate traffic revenue and this translates into improved content economics. And in terms of differentiation, we are also working very progressively on original content, and we are now producing web-only shows that are creating high engaging, edgy, but much cheaper compared to television content. And a number of our original shows are generating over 5 million videos viewed per episode on average, which is already close to hot content. And last, but not at least, we are building an ecosystem to generate the next-generation artists and producers, who will produce content for the web. And also, there's a content swapping going on with -- again, with the peers right now. So overall, I think, content as a percentage of revenue will continue to decline.

Cheung Koo Wing - Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Let me take the first part about mobile monetization. Overall, initial signs are positive. Especially in Q2, we have seen specific prime examples where cross-screen and mobile video marketing solutions are being adopted. To give you some examples, our leading advertisers are starting to adopt. On the cross-screen side, which means they are placing advertisements across PC, mobile as well as tablet. Examples include like IT companies, like Qualcomm, Samsung are doing that, FMCG companies, including [Chinese] on cross-screen. And then also advertisers are looking for solutions targeted towards just mobile as well.

“To achieve this goal, our international expansion strategy is to establish alliances with major Telecom, Cable, Satellite and Content Providers from around the world, where we provide the expansion platform via our breakthrough Internet to TV Delivery System, while relying on our Allies’ marketing muscle to promote and sell the “New Last Mile” service
enhancements to both prospective and existing subscribers. We are currently in talks with key players to implement this program”. Digital Utilities Ventures is in a maturing stage with dedicated and experienced management and clear investment policies. The outlook for the future is extremely bright."

Called The New Last Mile, it uses an Internet based platform to deliver its TV programming. This means that DUTV can deliver live programming of broadcast quality from anywhere in the world over the Internet directly:

Digital Utilities Ventures to Launch the First Open Source TV Network
GlobeNewswire
2012-04-17

NEW YORK, April 17, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Digital Utilities
Ventures, Inc (Stock Symbol UTV), an innovator in over the IP video
transport systems with its breakthrough New Last Mile Platform,
announced today its planned launch of the First Open Source TV Network
that will empower TV viewers to create and broadcast their own
programming via an exclusive broadcast channel for the Internet
Protocol TV (IPTV) market.

"The Internet is the world's dominant global communications platform
and is transforming how we connect. Our mobile phones have now evolved
from devices used just for making calls into "Smart-Phones" - basically
hand held computers with Internet accessibility. The same technology is
converting the common TV into high definition, large screen "Smart TVs"
with web access to online interactive media such as Internet TV, Media
Streaming, Social Networking and Web Browsing."

"We are harnessing this Communication Tsunami to create the first
broadcast channel for the Internet TV Revolution. Once launched, our
website will allow users to develop their own content and upload it to
our broadcast channel. This will unleash the full power of the Internet
as the ultimate content creator and broadcaster. Individuals will be
able to produce programming with an unlimited range of subjects
covering travel, sports, science, drama, comedy, politics etc. ending
the TV Industry's virtual monopoly of content and energizing an
untapped treasure trove of global talent," said Garry McHenry, CEO of
DUTV.

"As a result", continued McHenry, "advertisers can deliver custom ads
based on user data. Our platform and Smart TV technology is at the
center of what advertising is about--an in-depth audience understanding
that allows companies to connect to consumers where they are and
enhance a brand relationship. With this interactivity as the crux of
the new system, the way we watch and interact with TV will
fundamentally change." "Whether it's on a desktop, a mobile phone or on
television, DUTV will be there, streaming HD quality video." "It's one
stop shopping for both advertisers and consumers."
