Aereo Tees Up Three More Market Launches
Aereo reentered expansion mode Thursday, announcing launch dates for its broadband TV/cloud DVR services combo in three more markets: Miami, Houston and Dallas-Ft. Worth.
Aereo said it will debut in Miami on September 2, covering Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties and giving it a total reach of more than 5 million Floridians. Aereo said its initial offer there will include access to WFOR (CBS), WPBT (PBS), WTVJ (NBC), WSVN (FOX) and WPLG (ABC), as well as Telemundo, Univision, EstrellaTV, The CW, AntennaTV, Qubo, and ION, among others. Aereo also offers access to Bloomberg Television in all markets.
It's also set to debut in Houston on September 16, with a potential reach of 5.6 million consumers, and access to KRIV-DT (FOX), KPRC-HD (NBC), KTRK-HD (ABC), KUHT-DT (PBS), KHOU-DT (CBS), and KIAH-DT (CW), as MundoFox, Telemundo, AntennaTV, ION, Qubo, COZI-TV, and Saigon TV.
Aereo’s Dallas launch, set for September 23, will reach 6.7 million consumers across 31 counties across north Texas the company said. Stations that will be accessible via Aereo’s antenna array include KDFW (FOX), KXAS-TV (NBC), WFAA (ABC), KTVT (CBS) and KERA-TV (PBS), as well as COZI-TV, ME-TV, UniMas, Telemundo, EstrellaTV, ION, The CW, AntennaTV and Qubo.
Aereo has already debuted in New York City, Boston and Atlanta. It’s also set to launch services in Utah on August 19 and Chicago on September 13. Company CEO Chet Kanojia told C-SPAN last month that the company was on track to be in 22 markets by the fall.
Also last month, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit denied a broadcaster request that the full court review a three-judge panel of that court's April decision not to stop Aereo from delivering broadcast signals over the net while a lower court considers a broadcaster challenge to the service's legality.
Meanwhile, the ongoing dispute between CBS and Time Warner Cable is also generating some buzz for Aereo. The MSO has listed Aereo among several options available to customers in the New York for obtaining CBS content during the blackout, which affects 3.2 million TWC customers. If the dispute remains unresolved through September 23, Aereo will also present an option for TWC subs in Dallas.
Following a free first month, Aereo subscriptions start at $8 per month and include 20 hours of cloud DVR storage, or $12 per month for 60 hours. Aereo currently supports iOS devices, Roku boxes, the Apple TV box (via AirPlay), and several major Web browsers (Chrome, Internet Explorer 9, Firefox, Safari, and Opera). It expects to extend support to Android later this summer.
